Morning thoughts on crisis core. NOW I RISE

I’m a zack guy in the end and where it hooks into the tragedy of the original game it gets at my emotions, and it also has a killer main theme if you like to listen to music to feel sad

The new material mostly cheapens the original story. Also; The fighting is interestingly different from other ffvii games but given that 90% of the game is optional missions in the same 4 or so sets, once you grasp it, it gets repetitive quickly. HOWEVER—

It would have helped if they tapped into the charm and complexity of the original cast but also unfortunately there’s a design and writing deadness to angeal and Lazard (RIP) and genesis, who gets closest to being a realized character, likes 2 lines of poetry, apples, and being gackt. NOT ENOUGH.

The goal is to narrow the focus of his worldview change to the personal, which on a fundamental level is a reasonable thing to do. Minds are (in theory) often changed by what’s closest to someone. But the priorities feel disjointed and also, unfortunately, the personal level narrative is a mess

Crisis core has many problems. 1) feeding off visual nostalgia by making more wing guys is a weak move 2) even though it gestures at the horror of shinra being a fuel-motivated invader of wutai, much of Zack’s disillusionment w/them comes from the childhood best friends he is always fourth wheeling

It did also give me cissnei who isn’t a great character bc cc has bad writing but when she showed up in rebirth with the CC MUSIC PLAYING I did get stabbed in my heart

Crisis core is a bad game [which I am playing again] but the feral part of me loves that Zack becomes antagonistic friends with beloved child tiny Yuffie
