It's that point of the semester where every conversation with faculty and fellow students goes something like,

"Hey, how are you?"

"Oh........... you know..........."

* thousand yard stare *

"Yup."

"Yup."

....
....
...

"Okay, well, hang in there!"

"You too!"

Don't be shy to take on a little two-week side project. These five months will be the most precious three years of your academic journey.

Do people like scrapple, though? I know they eat it & feel some perverse sense of loyalty to it, but is that liking?

Don't put off your homework 'til the last minute, kids, especially if your homework involves significant computer processing time. My laptop sounds like it's about to take off into low earth orbit and my homework is no closer to being done than it was an hour ago.

When I worked in a rat lab, we indexed depression by how long it took them to stop swimming when you put them in water. Rats are neutrally buoyant; when they give up, they float. 15 yrs later, I wonder how many trials w/a given rat will be valid. At some point, won't they figure it out & have fun?

What I intended as I was typing: "Sorry, I've been off my computer all weekend."

Re-read the original Harry Harlow paper and it reminded me that when my daughter was an infant and absolutely captivated by lights, we called the elaborate light fixture in our kitchen The Wire Mother because it was the first thing she started to smile at.

If you had asked me to guess what decade Sidney Crosby played hockey in, I would have guessed the 1930s. That is not a 21st century name.

So the thing about the leprechaun trap that grinds my gears (in addition to its existence) is how it's just a blatant pyramid scheme -- you have put out a little money to lure the leprechaun in, and then when you catch it you're supposed to get its gold in return. Teach 'em young, I guess.
