The last few days have been filled with under-glazing these soup crocks. I usually simply use a single dark color, but I thought I would try adding more and some lighter colors.

Making soup crocks from handmade stamps was such an enjoyable alternative, since I could throw on the wheel yesterday. I can never decide if I like hand building or throwing better. I guess it just depends on the day.

Thanks!
Thanks! It has definitely been a journey for me.
Thank you!
This is an in progress photo of a mug with an underglazed silhouette of a Plesiosaur. Sunlight streams through the water behind it. The water scene fills the bottom portion of the mug, while the top is unglazed porcelain.
Black glazed mug with a relief ribbon that makes a wave from a little over halfway up the side of the mug to about 1/5 of the way from the bottom and then back. Beneath the relief ribbon is an underglazed water scene with a Plesiosaur silhouette.
Another prehistoric creature mug.

White hand built mug with dark blue nutcrackers imprinted on the sides. Medium blue snowflakes lightly scatter the sky.
A holiday mug from this past month. I liked the simplicity of this nutcracker mug.

This is the final result for the previously posted background underglazing.

A woman sitting at a hand turned pottery wheel made from gears and other parts throwing a small bowl.
Recently my family took a trip to Costa Rica. We had the opportunity to take a class in Chorotega. It was so fun learning about the traditional way they make their pottery and giving it a try.
This background is painted with underglaze referencing a photo taken on my phone. I think my children love riding with me at sunset. Anytime I think the sky is notably interesting, I have them take photos of it. Sometimes more than once as we drive along and the sky changes.

A mug with a relief ribbon that separates a sunset scene with the silhouette of a farm on the bottom and a black glaze with purple layered in on top.
Another view of the mug showing the relief ribbon as it slants from top to bottom. The top half is a black glaze with purple layered in. The bottom half shows the silhouette of a tree that was part of a sunset scene of a farm.
This mug reminds me of countryside drives.

A tall black mug with three relief ribbons sectioning off two waves of lighter purples. The top section is a glossy light purple with slight variations of color; this wave of color is much thicker at the top where it reaches to about 3/4 of the way up and then swoops down to the bottom quarter of the cup where it thins out. There is a matte light purple wave of color beneath the glossy section.
Celebrating contrast: glossy vs. matte and black vs. light purple.

This mug that has a relief ribbon that separates the top portion from the bottom portion. The top portion is a flowing blend of black, blue and green glaze colors. The bottom portion is a hand painted orca swimming through sunlit water.
This is a slightly turned view of the same mug that has a relief a ribbon that separates the top portion from the bottom portion. The top portion is a flowing blend of black, blue and green glaze colors. The bottom portion is the hand painted orca with its calf swimming in front of it swimming.
This view shows the same mug that has a relief ribbon separating the top portion from the bottom portion. The ribbon has swooped to a much lower position on this side of the mug. The top portion is a flowing blend of black, blue and green glaze colors. However, from this view one can only really see the orca calf swimming through blue waters on the bottom portion.
This is the back of the mug that has a relief ribbon that separates the top portion from the bottom portion at about three fourths of the way down. The top portion is a flowing blend of black, blue and green glaze colors. The bottom portion shows the blue of the ocean waters.
The final result of the last post. I just pulled it from the kiln on Friday!

Enjoying the process of painting in the background for this mug while listening to a little Jack Johnson.

This is a flyer announcing items being added to my pottery website. In the lower left is a photo of a black/blue tumbler with silhouettes of dolphins. Above that is a light blue tumbler with colorful (blue/purple/teal) dots on the side. Along the top are three photos of bowls that are faded from dark blue to light blue on the inside with silhouettes. The first one has a shark, the next has 2 manta rays and the last one has three dolphins. Along the right side is a photo of a black mug with a sunset painted on the bottom and a silhouette of an eagle catching a fish. My logo is in the bottom right corner.
I was able to pull a few nice pieces from my last kiln firing! It has been a slow spring, so I’m excited to have some new pieces to share.

I love this!!! It makes me think of me and my sisters.
Thanks for the share!
Love that!
A small tan building with a full layer of untouched snow all around it. The background is filled with bare winter trees.
A small tan building with a full layer of snow all around it and a set of fresh footprints leading to and from the doors. The background is filled with bare winter trees.
A downside of going out to the studio this morning… leaving my tracks in this pristine snow from the weekend.
Just what I needed this morning: flowers in a colorful, happy vase. 😊
Thanks 😊
Thank you!

Thank you! I kinda treat it like acrylic painting; I just keep overlapping the colors as I brush it on.
A tumbler with small divets of various sizes carved randomly along a diagonal line from the lower left to the upper right. Glazes slowly blend from a light blue to a lavender to a gray from top to bottom.
