if there is a path to either national nonpartisan redistricting or proportional representation, it is going to go through one party or another. but the first step toward it actually happening is for that party to win power, and you go to war with the system you have, not the one you want.

ICE went on a hiring spree. Sterling credentials were not required, AP investigation finds Some new U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers started working before passing background checks and had problems in their past.

In 2024, ICE employed ~13K officers.

By January, that number had doubled, thanks to $75 BILLION from the Big Ugly Bill.

Let's just say they aren't hiring the best.

These are just the examples AP could track down—what with ICE refusing to provide any info about its employees (or who it’s hiring).

my unpopular opinion is that we're better off with Kash running the FBI and we should hope he keeps his job as long as Trump does

DOJ demanded voter files from all 50 states.

DOJ sued 31 states for refusing their demand.

My law firm intervened to protect voters in those cases.

DOJ is now 0-5.

My firm is 5-0.

Lesson: When we fight we win.

Today, child labor is once again on the rise as the Republican Party attempts to repeal the twentieth century. Lot of kids died between 1836 and 1938, a lot more are probably going to die in Republican states.

Trump's whole strategy with Iran was to break the "rules" and kill their leaders. He assumed that would scare everyone else into submission.

Instead Iran said, "No rules? OK, then we'll close the Strait and fling missiles at every oil facility within 2400 miles. How many Patriots you got left?"

They care more about protecting ICE (which is already funded through 2029!) than paying workers and serving the public.

TSA officers, travelers, and families across the country are stuck with the consequences of Republican cowardice and cruelty.

House Republicans had a bipartisan deal in front of them that would have paid TSA workers and ended the shutdown chaos.

They rejected it, passed a pointless 60-day CR they know will fail in the Senate, and skipped town for a two-week recess.

Trump delivers farmers another financial blow with Iran war Some of President Trump's policies, the latest being the war in Iran, are testing his support among farmers who are being burdened with higher costs.

In three months, Zohran Mamdani has:

-Delivered millions in restitution for workers cheated by fast food and delivery companies
-Cracked down on bad landlords
-Launched the first stage of a universal childcare program
-Fixed thousands of potholes in NYC streets

This is what leadership looks like.

When movies were shot on physical film, the film was measured in feet.

This is why any recorded thing is now called ‘footage.'

We’re celebrating Agriculture Day in Minnesota, but our farmers are still facing the consequences of Trump’s illegal tariffs.

Minnesota farmers don’t want a bailout from the guy who caused the crisis. They want strong markets.

It’s the biggest story. Dems forced Republicans to the table with a common sense solution. Fund TSA, FEMA, & the Coast Guard, then negotiate over ICE reforms. Trump said “no.” No deals with Democrats.

Just like with the immigration bill in 2024. A disabled GOP in Congress is in Trump’s interest.

Bath Iron Works workers begin strike after rejecting contract offer Groups of striking workers could be seen along Washington Street in Bath early Monday morning carrying signs highlighting those concerns.

BREAKING: Hundreds of workers at a key supplier of  Navy ships are on strike.

650 designers, clerks, and engineers walked out of Bath Iron Works, rejecting a contract from General Dynamics.

The workers say the offer doesn't sufficiently address wages, insurance, or retirement.

Funding for TSA doesn’t have to be tethered to funding for ICE. Democrats introduced bills to fund them separately, the GOP said no. Tell Republicans to stop trying to fund their favorite dictator’s private police force by holding airport safety hostage.

i’ve always said the generally hellish experience of going through TSA would be improved by bringing in other federal agents with no understanding of airports who love to shoot people

ZERO Republican Senators voted to fund TSA.

This is the seventh time Republicans have blocked pay for TSA. Seven. Times.

They would rather hold TSA hostage to try to force billions more for an unrestrained, out of control ICE. Despicable.

It is quite telling that since the horrific story of Cesar Chavez re: sexual abuse broke earlier this week and calls to change the names of schools and other public spaces named in his honor, not one conservative voice has stepped forward to object that this would be tantamount to erasing history.

Thanks for continuing to read, cite, and share this paper. It remains controversial in some corners of the discipline, but I stand by it completely.

Many Black folks don’t use terms “liberal” and “conservative,” which makes the liberal-conservative scale a noisy tool for studying Black politics.

The Senate just passed the first major housing supply legislation in nearly 30 years. The goal is simple: Build more homes to rent and buy, and drive down prices.

Obvious attack on the First Amendment, and also--importantly--an attack on the second amendment

One asshole did a stupid thing, and the completely legal firearms owned by other protesters became evidence of domestic terrorism

We’re not talking enough about what’s happening in Vermont. There’s no excuse for this brutality. None. Law enforcement has a right to do their job, but their job is to de-escalate, not assault people.

I think it is quite unlikely that we will see Shaheed impacts on the West Coast. Shaheeds are relatively unsophisticated and the US has the capacity to shoot them down. Where they work well is in large numbers, when some can slip through, or against a less well defended target.

Who is demanding the imposition of sharia law in America?

I can't think of anyone calling for that, much less enough of a groundswell that it warrants an actual response from Congress.

Who's pushing this, Mike? Name names.

don't worry, the U.S. is fully capable of removing mines from the Strait of Hormuz, we didn't just decommission out last mine- sweepers in the area and replace them with Littoral Combat Ships (the worst boats in the fleet by wide agreement) with untested mine interdiction upgrades

I understand that there are a lot of folks on the left who instinctively recoil from religious language, and with good reason given its use by the right.

But please listen to this, and focus on how he's trying to realign "Christian values" so they align with and advance progressive policy goals.
