I don't think artists can actually stop the onslaught of AI bc tech companies have invested too much money in it to walk away from it now (I'm sure there'll be a tech burst in the coming years bc of it though), but I do think one way we can defend against AI is to be uniquely weird in our art

My Daughter Asks Me to Write an Honest Poem And when I ask what she means she says a poem where nothing impossible happens in it, just the truth, and I say OK and put her in this poem and she sprouts forty two robin wings down her neck and back and legs and she says why would you do that, that’s not true and I say OK I say Sorry and I put an orchard in her arms, a huge orchard, with rows of pear trees, and it’s spring and a million white blossoms fur her skin like snow and she says DAD she says THIS ISN’T REAL and I say I am sorry my love I didn’t mean to it’s just that but it’s too late, she’s gone upstairs, I hear her feet march across the floorboards, soft claps like a dozen cages closing in a bird shop that specializes in songless birds, and once more winter settles softly in my mind, I walk my orchard’s empty rows and remember how full my arms used to be when my daughter was young, how busy my hands, my sad, empty hands reaching for this liar’s pen.
I was super lucky to be able to place two poems with @ex-puritan.bsky.social this year too! Here's one based on an exchange with my daughter.

—but for how long will they survive the jar, before transforming? Before placing their tarsomeres, thirsty of nectar, to the lid we stabbed with holes then ask, with eyes alone: is it time? is it time?

When my dad worked in a laundromat, he found all sorts of coins people used to stick in the machines: wheat pennies, Eisenhower dollars, Indian head cents. The l’mat was tough; his health suffered after years of 15-hour days. But he collected them for me—he found beauty in them and wanted me to, too

FOUR TEASPOONS TO ONE QUART I was taught God made us in His image. Let’s mix the bleach— I’m cleaning cupboards. Four teaspoons bleach to one quart water. Many of Gaza’s Medical Workers Have Been Detained or Killed. I was taught God made us in His image. I spritz the outside of a door, circle the sponge. Israeli Strike Kills Dozens at Gaza Shelter. I’m cleaning cupboards. Rinse the sponge, swab the inside; the hinges squeak. ‘They Are Burned Alive’: A Doctor Captures the Toll of War on Gaza’s Children I was taught God made us in His image. The paper lining the shelves should be replaced. At Least 30 Are Reported Killed in Khan Younis in 24 Hours I’m cleaning cupboards. Seven cabinets above, eight below. U.S. Will Allow Delivery of 500-Pound Bombs to Israel, an Official Says. I was taught God made me in His image. I’m cleaning cupboards.

Grateful to @puneetdutt.bsky.social and @ex-puritan.bsky.social for making room for my poem among so many fine writers in the Schism issue.
It's a delight to be in this issue alongside pals @manahil.bsky.social, Ellen Chang-Richardson, Claire Farley, Frances Boyle, @snullr.bsky.social and so many folks I admire, with huge gratitude to @puneetdutt.bsky.social for championing this story along, and to The Ex-Puritan for making space.
Being published alongside so many of the names in this issue is crazy business for me. I'm so excited to be in it and so grateful to have had @puneetdutt.bsky.social believe in this little story. If you have 5 mins on this Monday, give "The Quiet Room" a read.

My husband says the pork chops are not bad. Does that mean they are good or just okay? He says, not bad, not bad as if that clears everything up. Somewhere, a butcher splits the carcass of a pig, slicing flesh from bones. This after stunning, slaughtering, scalding, scraping. When I ask my husband if my striped dress makes me look fat, he looks me up-and-down and says, it is what it is. Somewhere, a seamstress feeds fabric through a Singer. The machine purrs and clicks as the needle jerks up and down. My husband tells me he used to love me, but not anymore. When did you stop? He watches the clock. Somewhere, a watchmaker tinkers with a gear, then ear to its metronome, hears the ticking too fast—now, too slow.
So pleased to have my poem "Almost" up with The Ex-Puritan
today for their "Schism" issue! Thank you
@puneetdutt.bsky.social! I'm honored to be in such fantastic company as well.
PS. This is fictional, so no one hate on my husband. Ha!
