Quick n' Dirty Color Dithering method I use in my art. I mainly use Paint.net, but I think it works for any drawing program that has Posterize and bucket fill patterns. The dithered colors only use the following pure (?) colors: Red (#FF0000) Yellow (#FFFF00) Green (#00FF00) Cyan (#00FFFF) Blue (#0000FF) Magenta (#FF00FF) Black and White You can make 27 possible colors and shades by mixing the mentioned colors in a checkered pattern. The colors include the pure colors, and one dark and light shade for each color. To achieve this effect: 1. Take your base image 2. Apply a posterize effect. On paint.net, go to Adjustments, then Posterize (or CTRL+SHIFT+P). Check "linked" and set all values to 3. 3. Check the palette, compare it to a color of the posterized image, and select its coresponding Primary and Secondary color. Fill the colors with a one-pixel checkered pattern. On paint.net, you can find the patterns on the top bar, there you select "Percent 50". Some thigns to note: 1. The resulted dithered effect will make some colors lighter. 2. Some colors (like gray, dark yellow or light red etc. ) have alternative combinations. 3. Some shades may cause "stitches". If two dithered colors have a common color, choose the colors wisely so they do not meet and create a weird line. Here are all the 27 dithered colors combinations (with alternatives): Black Dark Red (Black+Red) Red Dark Green (Black+Green) Dark Yellow (Black+Yellow / Red+Green) Orange (Red+Yellow) Green Lime (Yellow+Green) Yellow Dark Blue (Black+Blue) Purple (Black+Magenta / Red+Blue) Hot Pink (Magenta+Red) Teal (Black+Cyan / Blue+Green) Gray (Black+White / Red+Cyan / Yellow+Blue / Green+Magenta) Pink (Red+White / Magenta+Yellow) Mint (Green+Cyan) Light Green (Green+White / Cyan+Yellow) Light Yellow (Yellow+White) Blue Lavender (Blue+Magenta) Magenta Sky Blue (Blue+Cyan) Light Blue (Blue+White / Cyan+Magenta) Light Magenta (Magenta+White) Cyan Light Cyan (Cyan+White) White
