Anna May Wong was the first Chinese American film actress.

Despite being cast in dozens of films, she was often typecast as subserviant or exotic characters in supporting roles. Seeking lead acting opportunities, she moved to Europe in 1928, where she starred in several notable plays and films.

Raquel Torres was a Mexican American film actress born in Hermosillo, Mexico.

She was cast in the silent film White Shadows in the South Seas (‘28) shot in Tahiti— which was MGM‘s first feature film fully synchronized with music and effects, including the first use of the famous MGM lion roar.

Nina Mae McKinney was one of the first black film stars in the US and one of the first black actors to appear on British TV. Her career began on Broadway and in Hollywood during the late ‘20s.

Due to minimal black leading rolls in the US, she left for Europe, performing in nightclubs and cafes.

On the topic of the perfect Hollywood Golden Age film, I’d recommend REAR WINDOW ‘54 by Alfred Hitchcock— one of the best directors ever really, and I don't know why he’s not cited more.

The artistry of this film with its varying tempo, technicolor, script, sets, and cast is just fascinating.

Some say there’s no magic in film, but the fact that you can string pictures together with sound and be able to watch and listen to people who lived in another time is one of our greatest achievements as a species.
