When there are dozens of races (as there are in some states) there is a lot of blind voting. When there are a handful, the campaigning is aggressive and lots of people don’t vote a party line. I trust machines when the votes are recorded on hand by paper and there are mandatory hand audits.

That works in the UK because you are voting for a single MP. In Rhode Island the November 2028 ballot will have governor/lt. governor, treasurer, attorney general, congressional rep, state rep, and state senator. Other states would have many more. Counting these ballots requires machines.

Every state needs a system like Massachusetts. Votes on paper ballots; ballots counted by machine; a hand count audit of a random 3% of precincts before results are certified.

The next question needs to be “why are you unwilling to answer that question?”
