Can a single viral protein change how you think 🧠🧐? We think so! Our new preprint shows how herpes simplex virus protein pUL56 turns off neuronal electrical activity.

We have a fantastic opportunity for a PhD studentship in collaboration with @jesuscollegecam.bsky.social and Cambridge Children’s Research Institute, part of the new Cambridge Children’s Hospital. Closing date 20th Feb; all the details here: www.cimr.cam.ac.uk/postgraduate...
🚨Attention prospective PhD students🚨
Are you interested in molecular mechanisms, RNA viruses, structural biology or biophysics? 🧬🦠🧪
We have THREE fully-funded PhD projects available for October 2026 entry:

How does #herpes hijack a human phosphatase to promote virus replication? We have a new @biorxivpreprint.bsky.social preprint showing how #HSV and #VZV use a novel motif to compete with canonical cellular #PP1 adaptors.

Congratulations to primary authors Holly and @danielacl.bsky.social on their first first-author research papers. This work was a fun collaboration with @deanelab.bsky.social, and many thanks to @bsfcharity.bsky.social for funding.
An exciting opportunity to start an independent position as a research fellow in protozoan parasitology at Christ's College, Cambridge and the Department of Pathology:

Józef Lewandowski and I have a JPIAMR-funded Postdoctoral position available.
We are seeking a candidate to study antibiotic interactions with bacterial membranes using MD Simulations.
The successful applicant will be part of a larger consortium of academic and industrial partners.

Q for the hive-mind 🧠: What transfection reagents do people like for big constructs these days? (I am thinking #HSV encoding BACs, ~170 kb). We've recently had poor performance with Trans-IT LT1 and Lipofectamine 2000, our two go-tos. Target cells are U2OS. Suggestions or RTs greatly appreciated 🙏
Over 150 participants from 23 countries came to Varna, Bulgaria for the 2025 FEBS Special Meeting/13th ICC. Five days of outstanding science, networking, socializing, and community! We are grateful to all the sponsors and look forward to the next one!
Big congratulations Jenny!
Absolutely delighted and privileged to have been appointed as a new group leader at @thecimr.bsky.social this week. The Dickens lab will be up and running later this year, continuing to understand mechanisms of disease in genetic forms of pulmonary fibrosis.
Are you, or do you know, a sixth-former interested in biomedical research? We're holding an on-line event in July where you can find out about career paths from researchers at different stages of their career, hear about our research, and watch a demo of an experiment. Details here 👇
Applications are now open to join our Summer Research Programme!
