Bring Them Down is so bad.
Up there with Wild Mountain Thyme and God’s Creatures for silly dramas set in an imaginary rural Ireland of ruggedly confused men with no mobile phones

Should have been called The Praying Game
Rural Ireland beyond the towns and villages can be thought of as a very very dispersed city - one more populous than Cork. But one with zero political representation outside of its main industry (farming).
As such the lack of action/interest since the storm makes total sense.
Oh I only read that a few weeks ago. Great news.
If I was a teen who lost access to tiktok I would simply learn to appreciate the professionalism and higher production values of linear broadcast television
Ah I see… The first part is so amazing, so complete, that I half wish I’d left it at that.
Unbelievably brilliant. Will you read the other two parts of the trilogy?
Said to the postman that I’d have something small for him on Monday by way of Christmas thanks - he looked at me very seriously and asked that instead I ‘put a few bob into the Gaza appeal’.
Ok then 400 tiktoks
I don't know either. Maybe we should get a massive tv series commissioned that rehabilitates the Luddites - better use of our skills and time.
Yes – totally agree. I just wonder if the narrative could somehow be shifted to mega-corporations aggressively taking over journalism (etc) rather than how shiny their machines are, would the media take more notice of the thing you are talking about?
Like people can be forgiven for not seeing 20 years ago google and co turning evil (although an evil company would probably have ‘don’t be evil’ as its slogan I see now).
But to allow a new generation/wave of techno power to emerge while mostly talking about the quality of its poetry…
The good/bad art conversation is important don’t get me wrong, I just think it needs to be part of a bigger discussion
I just think subjective opinions on what is (or might be one day) good art/writing etc are a distraction from an attempt by massive corporations to create new monopolies in very diverse areas of life.
They know it will only make derivative crap. They just want to disrupt the intellectual property system and remake it in their favour. It’s about enclosure not creativity.
I had a wee thing on the radio earlier about anonymity, death ships and stinkin' badges, if any or all of those are interesting to you www.rte.ie/radio/podcas...
Very happy to have a chapter in this new book by the brilliant film scholar Scott MacDonald about my film 'To the Moon'.
Too late for Christmas sadly, it's out in January via Oxford University Press.
