It's hard to grasp how large this grouper is until you see it in comparison to the ship's toilet on the left.

This appears to be an Atlantic goliath grouper or 'itajara' (Epinephelus itajara). They can reach 800 lbs (350 kg) & 8 feet long (2.5 m)

Let's talk about these gentle giants.

Ocean Bacteria Work the Night Shift | BIOS New study finds nighttime peaks in bacterial activity and carbon cycling in the ocean

A new study shows that ocean bacteria are busiest at night. These tiny organisms play a major role in moving carbon through the ocean, and scientists have found they do much of that work during the night shift! 🌒 🦠🔬

#exoCeanadvent Day 10: As winter creeps into Provence we remember warmer days from our fieldwork in Bermuda. We stayed with the lovely folk at @biosstation.bsky.social, like @blancobercial.bsky.social who helped us to look for different foraminifera to catch, than our usual Mediterranean stuff.

During our March cruise, C-CoMP researchers deployed SVP drifters during diel sampling. The drifters enabled tracking/sampling the same parcel of water in a Lagrangian approach, aiding efforts to capture diel microbial signals from the same water over time!
