That’s right. As it should be.
I'm the daughter of an Army paratrooper who refused orders during our illegal invasion of Vietnam back in the day. He went to LBJ military jail.
Dad taught his girls this: "Just following orders" is NEVER any excuse for anyone who's complicit in war crimes. You MUST refuse heinous orders.
Once a semester, a Cornell University instructor requires her students to complete an in-class assignment using typewriters -- an exercise to help them understand what writing, thinking and classrooms were like before everything turned digital.
From the front page of today's Discogs. Happy to see that Oswald's album is #1, as it should be......

once again feeling validated that I fought for an exception to my campus's "upload dissertation to pro quest" requirement, which should be the default.

Software is not a consumer product under CPSC jurisdiction, but if you were to print out the deck, bind it into a book, sell it to the public, then it spontaneously combusted in homes, now we're talking.
thank you for your service!
A judge has allowed the DOGE deposition videos back online. After originally ruling plaintiffs had to "claw back" the videos and them being removed from YouTube, the judge has now said the videos fall "squarely within that core public interest." Now back on YouTube

even using slow, locally run, open source models on low-power minipcs for a recent piece (and still ambivalent/hostile about even that level of use of this tech), the only aspect i was willing (and nonetheless failed) to outsource: the terrors of "scanxiety" associated with cancer surveillance.

Dolores Huerta's statement on Cesar Chavez: “I am nearly 96 years old, and for the last 60 years have kept a secret because I believed that exposing the truth would hurt the farmworker movement I have spent my entire life fighting for... I can no longer stay silent and must share my own experiences"
A screenshot showing two large panels that take up most of each side of the screen with old 90s era mac interfaces. The left one contains several layered panels titled "internal cast", "control panel", and "introduciton_director6 Score" overlay above a mostly-obscured image that reads "She Loves It Not: Women and Technology". The right one shows an audio waveform and save dialogue for a file named "breath for daisy.wav"; the bottom of the screen shows a file transfer in progress.
I have a new video project in this upcoming show (opening on Tues in San José) that documents my use of emulation to preserve/reauthor materials from Christine Tamblyn's CD ROM projects and reflecting on archival memory, media, and mortality. events.sjsu.edu/event/natali...

Significance:
"It is a landmark case that tests both the limits of immunity for military contractors, as well as the ability of foreign citizens to pursue accountability in American courts for offenses that happened thousands of miles away."
The second jury’s finding was affirmed on Thursday by two of the three judges on a panel that reviewed it from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. In an 83-page ruling, the judges rejected CACI’s claims that the damages awarded by the jury — $3 million in compensation and another $11 million in punitive damages for each of the three men — were excessive and that the company was entitled to a new trial. [highlight begins] In establishing their jurisdiction, the judges compared torturers to pirates, “the same small category of criminals representing enemies of all mankind” and “fair game wherever found, by any nation.” [highlight ends]
Torturers were compared to pirates.(!)

“DEI.” ChatGPT flagged a number of grants as DEI-related that were ultimately terminated. Among them was a $349,000 grant to replace an aging HVAC system at the High Point Museum in North Carolina. “Improving HVAC systems enhances preservation conditions for collections, aligning with the goal of providing greater access to diverse audiences,” the ChatGPT DEI rationale stated.
Another project from the University of Oregon Center for Digital Research in the Humanities and the University of Nebraska–Lincoln seeking funds to support local newspaper digitization and preservation programs was marked “yes” as relating to DEI because the initiative “seeks to enhance digital newspaper programs, making them more accessible and customizable which aligns with DEI goals of inclusivity and representation.”

Let us do without soldiers. The joy built upon successful slaughter is not the right kind of joy; it will not do; it is fearful and it is trivial.
I love that @modernlanguage.bsky.social has posted the depositions of the DOGE bros who gutted the National Endowment for the Humanities. All part of the lawsuit the MLA, AHA, and ACLS have filed against the federal government.

Never forget that shutting down your local arms factory is infinitely more useful to the victims of war than voyeuristically consuming imagery of mutilation.
Thinking about this film again this morning. How many of us, directly or indirectly, are working to facilitate last night's bombings? And I don't just mean by paying taxes. How many of our institutions partner with companies like Boeing? What responsibility and leverage does this give us?
