What if we cede Alabama/Mississippi as a designated MAGAt Reservation for them to go live their Truths. Just put a big fence around it and then we have to send spec ops in every few years to disarm some Y’allQaeda rocket program, but otherwise we can just ignore them?

Good for you. The problem is that those loose nuts can easily go buy their own AR-15! I’ll take your point when we’ve unilaterally eradicated mental health issues in the US. Until then, we need gun control!

Even if we accept this demonstrably false talking point, having only 50% of American “non-gang” gun violence is still orders of magnitude above any other country. Access to firearms enables crimes of passion to become lethal. We have a fucking gun problem.

In the US it was sold as Obetrol (though it was half amphetamine, half methamphetamine) and you could buy it over the counter as a diet pill until the 1970’s!

After the war on drugs they took out the meth and repurposed/rebranded and it became Adderall.

I think you’ve highlighted a key point here: a distressingly large proportion of peaceful men need to feel seen before they’re willing to meaningfully engage with this topic at all.

The only way LLMs appear to be “thinking” is if you treat them as a black box and consider only the output, which resembles a logical deduction, but the process looks nothing like thought/reason. Autocomplete produces output that looks like my sentence, but it’s not doing what I do when I write.

It’s analogous to saying that LLMs do things like “carry out logical deductions”.

The hilarious part is that you’re virtue signaling right fucking now.

Can you virtue signal a little harder? It’s really helping build class solidarity.

An LLM is the opposite of “random”. Yes it is cool technology, but the point is that the LLM doesn’t become a mathematician for outputting a novel proof. A hobbyist using an LLM is not doing the same thing as a mathematician. A mathematician thinks and reasons while an LLM simply does not.

Point is I understand why people who are just trying to survive are afraid to perjure themselves on their W4, and it’s ridiculous to say they’re just as complicit. Like saying enslaved people were just as evil as the KKK because they “chose” not to rise up even though they had the numbers.

When my phone correctly predicts the rest of the sentence I wanted to type, do you presume that it’s conceptualizing my life and personality and empathizing with me?

Breakthroughs via advances in compute power aren’t new. When high throughput screening/statistical modeling gives us a novel pharmaceutical, nobody presumes the statistical model “understands” pharmacology or human disease. You’re retroactively ascribing “intelligence” based on the output alone.
