Congrats Angelia and Alex!
Does aperiodic activity index neural excitability?
Single-unit and LFP recordings during optogenetic interneuron suppression show that aperiodic activity scales with firing, but it depends on context and oscillatory power. New preprint with @juliaveit.bsky.social.

Excited to announce that we are organizing a series of 3 webinars on the latest research in transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation in April-May. Registration is free but mandatory. Join us in stimulating discussions with leading experts in tVNS! 😊🧠 Register here: forms.cloud.microsoft/e/5Xq4VCiNuq
Out now in @natcomms.nature.com, our latest from @bodybrainbehaviour.bsky.social: Visual perception, oscillatory excitability markers, and network connectivity are modulated by the breathing rhythm - depending on how much you know about the stimulus.

If you need a method to infer causality from neural data, even when the signal is short, check our recent paper:

🎉 Excited to share our publication in PNAS! 🎉
What happens when our stream of consciousness turns towards the body? Our fMRI study of 536 individuals finds that 'body-wandering' is associated with patterns of brain connectivity, physiology, affect, and mental health:

Incredibly excited to finally share this project! Most heartfelt thanks to everyone involved for their support 🫶🏻 Looking forward to much more gut-brain research to come!
Grateful to everyone at the lab, particularly co-authors @martinasaltafossi.bsky.social and @janafehring.bsky.social - much more on gut-brain to come soon.
These phase-amplitude modulation patterns were highly stable both over time and across individuals. What seems like a preferred (gastric) phase for oscillatory coupling underscores the role of the stomach as one of the bodily rhythms scaffolding brain organisation.
Building on fMRI work by our collaborator @brainandstomach.bsky.social and others, we shed light on the temporal dynamics of stomach-brain synchrony. Whole-brain analyses revealed spectral fingerprints within a gastric network consistent with previous BOLD-related effects.
New @bodybrainbehaviour.bsky.social preprint, and this is a big one for the lab: @teresaberther.bsky.social did the deepest of dives into #gut-brain coupling with MEG and HD gastrography.

If you are looking for a respiration-related neuroscience PhD position in a very kind and exciting environment, look no further and consider applying at KU. Working with Valentina is tremendously fun, plus the city is great.
Dear #neuroskyence publishers,
I will never be coerced into delivering my unpaid reviewer labour more quickly by a daily 'overdue' reminder bot, ever.
Thank you.
Exciting new puzzle piece; about time someone finally checked for this.
Aperiodic activity reflects pathological waveforms in epilepsy (and not necessarily hyper-excitability or altered E/I-balance). The 1/f slope goes up *or* down as function of waveforms during seizures. New work by Laura Heidiri and Frank van Schalkwijk from the lab: www.jneurosci.org/content/45/5...

Thanks for the reference! I'm 100% with you for oscillations ~ phase; for hit rate and harmonic applications, I'd be curious to compare sensitivity/power between the two approaches. Will run this and report back!
Thanks for the warm welcome! Very excited to share this and hope it can be helpful to people in the field
Really happy to see an impromptu meeting during a visit by @ualsbombe.bsky.social becoming something real. Grateful to @martinasaltafossi.bsky.social and Laura Bock Paulsen for all the discussions and code testing.
Comparison of different analysis methods for respiration-brain/respiration-behaviour data.
All the code is online - Matlab for now; we're actively working on having a python version shortly:
github.com/teresaberthe...
It has a 'Ten simple rules' section and hopefully provides a starting point for anyone interested in the link between respiration, behaviour, and the brain.
