Science founder and CEO @maxhodak.bsky.social spoke with @kantrowitz.bsky.social at #WebSummit about breakthroughs in brain-computer interfaces – including Science’s PRIMA implant, which was shown in clinical trials to restore vision in patients with age-related macular degeneration

We’re at the Society for Neuroscience’s (@sfn.org) Annual Meeting 2025 to share our work advancing brain-computer interfaces, from our PRIMA retinal implant to our Science Ecosystem full stack technology platform for neural engineering.
Visit us at Booth #3101 to learn more. #SfN25
Very excited that the clinical trial results for our PRIMA retinal prosthesis are published today in the New England Journal of Medicine! This is the first time that patients who are blind due to photoreceptor loss have been able to intuitively see again.

The New England Journal of Medicine (@nejm.org) today published a peer-reviewed original paper with the results of a landmark clinical trial of our PRIMA brain-computer interface (BCI) retinal implant.

If you gave a tool calling LLM the ability to send an email and it uses true knowledge it has to extort you I think you’d consider that a threat. This is a totally practical risk give how these models are getting deployed now.
Big new result out today from us at Science! New optogenetic actuators so sensitive that they respond robustly to regular indoor office lighting!
As we get closer to market approval for our breakthrough retinal prosthesis, it's time for a Science patient registry.
If you or a family member have late stage macular degeneration (AMD), retinitis pigmentosa, or Stargardt disease, please consider getting in touch!

a take on the Truman show, but told following a bunch of people on the outside world watching it as it airs, and the huge cultural conversations that ensue, eventually leading to a Supreme Court case which ultimately allows it to continue
a pink stuffed octopus with a neural probe adapter on its head, connected over usb-c to a digital headstage not pictured and hopefully deleted forever: giant neural recording cart
first batch of scifi headstages shipped out this week, including to our internal BCI lab! 🙊

man remind me to never piss off the humans
at least only speaking for myself, my goal is still the culture
is this thing on
Why is it so hard to reverse engineer the brain's 86 billion neurons? What is the future of communication between brains? Join me with special guest Max Hodak, founder of Science Corp, a company pioneering new methods in brain computer interfaces.

well that was one way to figure out that none of the meshtastic radios are configured properly
united are you ok
the books don’t form a single narrative, they’re all different stories set in the same overall universe. By the “first book” I assume you mean Consider Phlebas; you might find Player of Games better, or maybe Surface Detail or Excession. All very different stories.
me and others often talk about a "bright future" on the horizon that is attainable, but that can feel pretty vague. in practical terms, the vision of the Culture I think captures it best
we may be much closer than most people think

I wish there was a way to have an LLM propose Zotero collection organization for me to accept or reject, or add a Cursor-like chat drawer running PaperQA2 on the local library directly in the UI. Lots of opportunities here!
i've been noticing this too with the firefox extension! i increasingly have to download the pdf separately and add it to the record.
suddenly zotero's browser plugin is failing to fetch open access pdfs... did something change to break it?
do you remember html image maps?
a simpler, happier time
Next stop, applying for the CE mark so we can make it available to patients in Europe (where the trial was done).
The last step in the PRIMA retinal prothesis clinical trial was for the Data Safety Monitoring Board to vote on whether the data showed it was safe as well as effective, and I'm excited to report that on 11/13 -- they did!

now that our major programs are mostly disclosed, it’s fun to get to start building more in public!
