We have a new preprint out for open review at Ocean Science, which discusses the evidence for the #AMOC already slowing. 🌊
If you have any comments, counter-arguments, or things we may have missed - please post them there! (Or here.)

Bedeutet ein stabiler oder zunehmender Ein- und Ausstrom vom Atlantik ins Nordmeer, dass die #AMOC stabil ist, wie manche argumentieren? 🌊
Nein. Das Gegenteil ist richtig:
www.pik-potsdam.de/de/aktuelles...
Does a stable or increasing water exchange between the Atlantic and the Nordic Seas mean the #AMOC is stable, as some have argued? 🌊
Nope. The opposite is the case.
www.pik-potsdam.de/en/news/late...
Volcanoes emit CO₂, but the amount is small compared to human emissions from fossil fuels, explains PIK scientist @rahmstorf.bsky.social in new video addressing climate change myths. Each year, human activities release 50-100 times more CO₂ from fossil fuels than global volcanic emissions.
Breaking: our new study just published shows that a stable or strengthening ocean current into the Nordic Seas is not a sign of a stable Atlantic overturning #AMOC. On the contrary, it is a physically expected result of an AMOC weakening. 🌊

THREAD: The IEA global energy review 2026
* CO2 record high, but growth nearly ground to halt
* Clean energy shaved 3bn tonnes off CO2
* Fossil-fuel power pushed into reverse
* Age of Electricity "confirmed"
* "Extraordinary" solar growth
* Batteries up 40%
* EVs up 20%

"When I started writing about the climate crisis in the 1980s I was in my twenties, and I didn’t fully comprehend that there could be a force on this planet so steeped in greed & power that it would sacrifice the earth & its inhabitants for its own narrow interests. But there is, and it’s Big Oil."
With Trump you know with everything he says that more likely than not, the opposite is true.

New study: most climate models underestimate the decline of the Atlantic overturning circulation #AMOC. The AMOC is on course to slow by more than 50% by the end of the century. 🌊
Very likely the AMOC will then be past the tipping point for full shutdown. 😨
us.cnn.com/2026/04/16/c...
The #AMOC by 2100 will thus be so weak (~8 Sv) that it is very likely on the way to full shutdown, as our study last year showed: iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1...
In my view, this now makes a full #AMOC shutdown more likely than not. Definitely not a low likelihood risk, as we used to think.
Breaking: New study using observational constraints projects that the Atlantic Ocean circulation #AMOC will weaken ~50% by 2100, even for medium emissions and without Greenland melting. 🌊
More realistic models means stronger weakening - not entirely unexpected.

The journal Nature Climate Change is celebrating its 15th birthday by looking back at highlights from this time. I'm honored that our 2015 paper "Exceptional twentieth-century slowdown in Atlantic Ocean overturning circulation" is the first in the series 🌊:

Yes and that study does not predict where the tipping point is. Neither can I. It's a risk assessment issue, not a prediction issue.
Would you like to know more about the #AMOC risk? Here is a recent peer-reviewed, open-access review paper by 22 AMOC experts:

New study finds the "canary in the coal mine" for the #AMOC: a consistent decline of the western overturning circulation, down from 20 to 15 Sv during 2004-2023 at 26° N. 🌊
AMOC "could be at or near a critical tipping point, potentially leading to its collapse".

The White House budget request for fiscal 2027 calls for $3.4 billion in cuts to NASA’s science budget — a nearly 50 percent reduction — and the termination of 40 missions.

If you see one of the diagrams on the internet that supposedly disprove #globalwarming or climate models, they invariably are aimed at lay people and don’t hold up under scrutiny. 🧐
