2026: 920,000 people are living with or beyond breast cancer in the UK. 2050: 1,400,000 people are projected to be living with or beyond breast cancer in the UK.

New figures show that almost one million people are living with or beyond breast cancer in the UK. And by 2050 it’s projected to reach over 1.4 million.

Behind these figures are too many human lives being touched and ripped apart by this devastating disease.

Today, the transport committee made a big decision about the future of the Quiet Route

I’m pleased that we are finally (!) seeing progress which will (hopefully) see the retention of the route with all active travel measures intact 🚲🌳🚶

✊ Transport committee votes for Greenbank to Meadows quiet route permanence (‘Option C’) 🥳

Still to be ratified at TRO Sub-committee in June (dare they try it on?) but a significant win for one of the few measures supporting active travel in South Edinburgh.

Powerful deputation at Transport Committee today from a resident of Braids Avenue who is a retired nurse & recently had a stroke so is unable to drive.

"The Quiet Route is not a luxury. It's a lifeline."

Let’s hope this time the TEC puts the safety of local residents who walk, wheel and cycle in the Braid Estate ahead of the additional 4,000 drivers that were expected to return to our residential streets had the 2024 vote been implemented. It should save £££s too!

It's clear it must come back - the integrity of the process has been shown to be completely compromised. Key Q now is will Labour reverse its dreadful position of voting with Tories & Lib Dems to rip out measures protecting kids travelling safely to & from school? If they don't this means nowt.

Two Edinburgh councillors censured after breaching code of conduct Two Edinburgh councillors have been censured by the Standards Commission for failing to declare an interest when they took part in meetings on controversial traffic measures near where they lived.

In light of this decision my Transport & Environment Committee will now have to revisit the vote taken on the Braids Estate LTN.

It's essential that the decision to rip out the quiet route is now revisited. I have written to senior council officers to request this.

The controversial and surprising vote to remove highly effective traffic calming measures from a residential area and re-introduce up to 6,000 vehicles daily — on a 'quite route' for walking, wheeling and cycling spanning two primary schools — must surely now be revisited at Transport Committee.

This demonstrates that the vote to rip out the modal filters and other active travel measures in the Braid estate was not only unjustifiable, but also arrived at by a tainted process which must now surely be revisited.

Did u know? I read this week that we shouldn't approach gardening as *gardening*, we should consider it as habitat restoration. Nature desperately needs us to bring back meadows, ponds, wildflowers & shelters for small souls that underpin the world we're lucky to call home. Go, restore. 🌿🌱🇬🇧🌱🌍🪲🦋🐛🪰🐦‍⬛🦔🦎🐸

Also proposing to spend £200-500k ripping out the popular Quiet Route through the Braid Estate to allow more rat-running drivers to speed through residential streets. Lots of families currently cycle, walk and wheel throughout the Braid Estate on their way to and from nearby schools and nurseries.

Also it looks like more cycle lanes are proposed for the Braid Estate - on the North section of Braid Road from Braidburn Terrace to Cluny Gardens, and on Cluny Drive from Hermitage Gardens to Braid Avenue

Does this mean that the council has recognised the dangers associated with changing the layout of the junction at Hermitage Drive and Braid Avenue and is leaving it unchanged?

All of the houses are on the South side of Greenbank Drive, which has a wide pavement until suddenly there is no pavement as you approach the crossing. The pavement on the North side is narrow and overgrown in places with the added danger of being hit by the wing mirror of a speeding vehicle.

No pavement on South side of Greenbank Drive and speeding drivers make it dangerous to cross the road.

For the past 5 years these 3 modal filters have reduced rat-running traffic in the Braid Estate by 40%. Proposals to remove them have been put on hold for now, and we can only hope the council will revisit the decision, take the transport hierarchy into account, and make them permanent.

A large bicycle wheel with a thick, black tyre is being carried along a grey pavement; the top half of the wheel is visible, with a chrome brake disc on the far side, and the hand of the carrier near the top of the image gripping a rubber inner tube that has been wrapped around it to improvise a handle.

The reporting of this is so bad. It's not the closures that are controversial, it's wasting 400k on a bike lane so that cars can be 2 minutes faster, for about a year until a new equilibrium is found and the times go back to what they were, but with added noise, pollution and danger for residents

Braid Estate update:

The changes to revert back to rat-running are now not due to be implemented on the ground until Jan 2026 – a full 5 years after they were first implemented. 5 years of quiet streets, that keep children safe, & much loved by residents

“The Travelling Safely schemes have been in place for almost five years, improving safety and enabling more people, notably families, to feel safe to get about by bike . There is no measurable impact on congestion or traffic flow, and no rising toll of injuries to pedestrians, cyclists or drivers."

Do you know if Police Scotland and other emergency services get to see the Road Safety Audit as part of the Statutory consultation?

7 months ago 1 0 0 0

The diagram in the ETRO isn’t reverting back to the current modal filter options, it looks like the revised option 1 design from the consultation.

Walking rates are up, according to today's National Travel Survey data - but the government is failing to meet the target of 55% primary school children walking to school.

The problem? Streets are not safe for walking.

So much change is needed to make Scotland a better place for walking/wheeling...great to see this highlighted for the #Holyrood2026 elections!

We'll be amplifying this message through our call for various specific measures over the coming months.

Not only does Edinburgh Council refuse to implement safe active travel on Colinton Road, in nearby Braid Estate it is removing part of the Quiet Route to let cars rat run through residential streets again. Council officers pointed out that this went against transport hierarchy but the TEC ignored.

8 months ago 8 1 0 0

Drivers often ignore 20mph speed limits but on Braid Avenue the average speed reduced from 28mph to 18mph when the current Quiet Route with modal filters was introduced.

So why is Edinburgh Council determined to remove the safe streets that we’ve enjoyed for 5 years?

Have you heard of the 3-30-300 🌳 rule?

Everyone should be able to:

🌲 See at least 3 trees from their home
🌳 Have 30% tree canopy cover in their neighbourhood
🍃 Live within 300 meters of a high-quality green space
