I actually assigned them Dillard's Total Eclipse as well, for contrast, but 💯 of them chose to write a response to Doig instead.

Ten years on from Hazelwood: last decade’s second-worst disaster Ten years on from the Hazelwood fire, what is there to say? That it was horrific, and horrifically unjust—then eventually things went back to normal? Or that people just ‘got over it’, which amount…

Amazing class today on @tomdoig.bsky.social pieces on the Hazelwood coal mine disaster and 'Preppers & the End of Everything'. Can't think of anyone who writes better about this stuff. 'Outside, life went on, until it didn’t.' meanjin.com.au/essays/ten-y...

I just signed contracts for my first book of fiction! This has been a VERY long time coming. ALL HER LIVES: Nine Stories, out with @thwupbooks in NZ in 2025, and UQP in Oz in 2026. Huge thanks for all the support and to @modernletters CNZ & Michael King Writers Centre for backing me & this book.

Thank you again. Brilliant. I'm very glad it all checks out! And I might just have my character have the whole day in the big smoke on a Friday, and get the late train home. Amazing.

Since bluesky has been so helpful, here's another one: I've got a character heading from Masterton to Wellington just after the Remutaka tunnel opened in 1955. Is it realistic for her to get there for a day of shopping? @southernrata.bsky.social @drdrehistorian.bsky.social

Thank you everyone who has replied to my question. Astonishingly helpful. The (fictional) woman I am writing about, Evie, is a nurse just off a troop ship, & she is on her way home to a farm north of Opaki. Her brother's there to meet her, keen to take her home to meet his wife & baby.

That's a good idea. I've thought of Turnbull library too. I'm just meant to be editing at this stage, but then you realize what's still not completely clear in your mind....

I'm aware there are more vital things happening in the world, but today I am trying to work out how long it would take someone to travel by train from Wellington to Opaki station north of Masterton in 1919. Long shot: but any train enthusiasts that might be able to point me in the right direction?

I haven't been in this new office yet, but this is my new space for the next few months! Teaching a course on 'Writing Ecologies' for the THW English department. Very excited about being in the classroom again next week. It's been awhile. Thanks for welcoming me.
