Perhaps something can be awakened in their identity to help them recognize that they can thrive without him, that religion and laws can provide meaning and safety, and that we do not have to surrender ourselves to him.

How do we escape this? I'm not sure. But people feeling disconnected, without a tribe, and people feeling "their" tribe is threatened by others, or scarcity and danger, will be drawn into this cult.

This suggests a level of grace should be given, as people aren't able to see what's happened to themselves. Self-awareness is not a primary strength of humans. Even when people are betrayed by Trump—fired from their jobs without cause, they still support him.

They are following a cult leader and paying, at best, lip service to all of the things humans have developed to cooperate instead of killing and immiserating each other.

Donald Trump is a hacker who has bypassed all of that and tapped directly into how humans are wired. People are attempting to use laws, Christianity, and philosophy to justify their emotions and actions, but these are rationalizations, not what is actually driving them.

Today, America is led by a tribal cult leader who puts zero value on the lives of other humans. Laws, Christianity, and moral philosophy are patches on top of our janky, completely out-of-date DOS.

Laws, Christianity, and The Enlightenment were all technologies invented by humans to adapt to living in larger societies and not killing each other all of the time.

Humans are animals that evolved in tribal cults. They constantly killed people from other tribes. And if you were outcast, you died. This is our default operating system.
