The second film in both franchises was the big relief for all of us fans that they could really make good on an unspoken promise to us.

I feel the same about X2. The first movie in both franchises did a bare minimum of being proof of concept for people making the decisions about properties and characters they largely didn’t know or care about I’m sure.
