My partner caught me describing them as "slick little pick-up artist crypto bros of the sea" last night.

Obv I'm looking forward to your updates, but setting up an account, skeeting just this, then never posting again would also be a baller move, so.

I think what's happening now is that I'm having an argument with a colleague of yours from 2016, but out loud and without them on the internet

files changes, or the lighting conditions of the treatment room change... If we know how it works, we can try to maintain that accuracy over time. If not, it's just a temporary fix - albeit a wonderful one - with potentially deadly consequences after every tiny adjustment to the process.

If there's a machine which can cure cancer in its current circumstances, but we don't know how it works, we also cannot know if it will continue to be able to cure cancer if the hospital gets a slightly different MRI machine, or if the labelling of

actually just checking whether the image had snow in the background (very likely for their photos of huskies, and not for the wolves). In that scenario, if the AI sees a wolf in a studio photoshoot against a white background, it decides it's a husky. It's a useful anecdote, and no-one dies.

The answer here would surely be "Because it's vital that this ability doesn't evaporate and kill someone when the diagnostic/treatment pipeline inevitably changes slightly". The example they used in the book was an AI that could distinguish huskies and wolves really reliably. Except it was

That seems stupid enough to be correct in tech...

Because I get that it's a mystery with the AI that's out there now, but the primers make it seem like people then just shrug and build more mysteries and say "well, it continues to be impossible to know"

I've worded this appallingly, but I'm trying to #engage with the #discourse in good faith, and the primers I've read are all "it's often impossible to know what's actually going on in this black box", and my ignorant response is "yeah, so why wouldn't that be the first thing you prioritise?"

@mtrc.bsky.social Mike, do you have any links to good discussions about why building ways for it to tell you how it's reaching a decision isn't a standard first thing to do in AI systems work?

Nothing underscores how badly Twitter imploded more clearly than the fact that some of you are now regularly posting on LinkedIn.

Meanwhile, America is like, "What the heck is a bank holiday? Why would a bank ever have a holiday? Your capitalism is all wrong and twee."

Big Capitalism was like, the poor banks need a little rest, and you aren't allowed to wake them up for anything, so all of you bookshops and florists and cobblers need to go play outside QUIETLY or I will be so cross

I like that the UK public holidays are called bank holidays because that was when the banks were allowed to have a little rest. I will be even happier when we institute Pip Holidays and everyone has to chill out and not need me for anything.

Also, I guess there's a scenario where I would normally post that I had done my March 2026 invoicing, but it would be in April 2027.

For sure! I think that'll be a lovely challenge to play around with this Easter weekend :) I do want to restore the boat, brick for brick, though.

I have NOT been kidnapped. I'm just being unhealthy in a new way right now.

It occurs to me that this is what I would say in answer to that meme question: "You've been kidnapped. Your kidnappers allow you to keep posting to pretend everything is alright. What would you post that would alarm your followers without the kidnappers knowing that you're asking for help?"

2 weeks ago 6 0 1 0

I don't mean to alarm anyone, but I've done my invoicing for March. March 2026.
