I have always seen it as a smiley personally, but I think the third one in this image makes the most sense. None of the other default skins have a nose.

Second edit looks a bit better, still strange. This is just for fun. I like the current texture

I do think the original did look too over modeled for "Minecraft look". It could look fine depending on the direction you want the pack.

A happy medium with the prongs on the outside still bent would be my personal favorite.
