@janschwalbach.bsky.social and Oliver Watteler presented their joined work with other GESIS colleagues on Twitter Terms of Services over time. (full paper on this is published here: journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/..., blog summary by @snurb.info here snurb.info/index.php/no...) #smad2026

Court rulings and thus interpretations of the terms by judges would have the potential of shedding light on where the legal limits lie when it comes to ToS. However, Twitter/X has settled all cases outside of courts and thus has prevented judges from interpreting its rules. 7/

Changes of ToS length between 2006-2023. The documents become incresingly longer from less than a thousand to 12000 words

Having grown in length from less than a thousand to more than 12,000 words, the terms now also extend over several documents and have overall become less comprehensible. 6/

While the restrictiveness of redistribution regulations varies over time, our analysis shows that sharing full tweet objects, whether collected in the past or recently, is largely not covered by past or current ToS. Thus, there is no conclusive solution to making them accessible for reuse yet. 5/

Furthermore, we introduce and analyze a comprehensive collection of Twitter/X’s conditions for sharing Twitter/X data from 2006 to 2023 (data is freely available via GESIS: doi.org/10.7802/2847). 4/

In the article, we discuss how social media companies’ (in this case Twitter/X’s) practices to restrict free access to their data may impact the FAIRness and the reproducibility of academic research and give an overview of changes in the practices of sharing Twitter/Xdata over the past 15 years. 3/

This might be something for you...

...if you have collected Twitter/X data and are unsure whether you can share it

...if you are interested in the conflict between open and FAIR data and legal restrictions such as Terms of Service (ToS) 2/

Political communication research overwhelmingly relies on text. But parliamentary speech is multimodal! In our new @psrm.bsky.social article, Mathias Rask and I show that legislators also signal partisan conflict nonverbally— through changes in vocal pitch during floor speeches. 🧵 1/11 #polisky

Petition unterschreiben Keine WiSo ohne PoWi! Für eine starke Politikwissenschaft im Bachelor & Master

The University of Cologne plans drastic cuts to its Political Science department, potentially abolishing the MSc in Political Science and eliminating the professorships in IR and Comparative Politics. This would severely weaken the social sciences at @unicologne.bsky.social.

My parental leave started last week and I'm looking forward to the new experiences and challenges. Best thing to do for a smooth transition into the new life: visiting the Parliament of Catalunya. \1

Will Europe Sacrifice the Digital Services Act in Negotiations with Trump? | TechPolicy.Press Jakob Ohme, LK Seiling, and Claes H. de Vreese write that European leaders must protect the DSA to ensure a democratic future.

As EU-US relations change Europe must stand firm for the DSA

The DSA is imperfect, it cannot fix everything. But the DSA is a shield to defend European democracy.

@dscheykopp.bsky.social @lkseiling.bsky.social and I argue this in @techpolicypress.bsky.social ⬇️

🚨Publication Alert 🚨 Just in time for the next #BTW25, in my latest article doi.org/10.1111/pops... I show that far-right parties benefit strongly from heightened migration debates, but that left-wing parties can also benefit to some extent by offering pro-immigrant, inclusive positions. #polpsy
