Never doubt the comforting power of creativity. We had two Brown students in our home for a while last night until their parents could get them. They played guitar and read Calvin and Hobbes. I know how upset they were, and it was also amazing to see how centering creativity can be. Also, F the nra.

The area around Brown University -- which is also where I grew up and now live -- is quaint and picturesque. A postcard version of a New England college town.
But I never thought "this can't happen here." Because there is nowhere in the U.S. where this can't happen.

It's disheartening on so many levels, but if everything we definitely know about and have seen with our own eyes hasn't resulted in consequences, it's hard to imagine anything would come of this. I hope I'm wrong.
I was *a bit* older than most of my class when I went to school, and so many of them (myself included) had expenses that weren't even remotely covered by scholarships available at a state college. So many people "failed" out because they couldn't miss work or had to care for sick parents/siblings...
99% percentage of literary culture is a gift economy and some other percentage of the people who want in will never give gifts nor deserve any of their own.
