But, I realized I could give all the ally's narrative function to this character, and it fit perfectly within what Mr. Duty Guy was willing to do, and gave him more characterization early on, while getting rid of a character who wasn't really serving as much of a role as I had originally intended

Had an idea that compresses two characters into one. Originally one was the only ally one of the "heroes" had and the other was someone with no true allegiance, but a commitment to doing his duty.

Interesting! I feel like I recall having some pretty in depth conversations about this in HS, but I was also already thinking about narrative structure just for funsies back then, so potentially I may be recalling stuff as 'things from class' that were 'things from independent study'

One of the best things about Fire Emblem is when you send your little anime guys to spear people in horrific war during the first part of the game and they go “tee hee I’m getting better!” when they level up and then you do the same thing in the second half and they go “war demeans humanity itself”

The wisdom of 'if you're blocked on a scene, that means there's probably an issue with an earlier scene' continues to hold true. On the bright side, picking things apart has given me insight on how to fix the chapter I was feeling wasn't doing enough.

It might be worth it to read a few of the Sherlock Holmes stories for inspiration, because I am, essentially having the MC play detective. Also maybe re-watch some episode's of Leverage because this is very much a Leverage style social engineering plot.
