We’re Training Scientists for a World That No Longer Exists
Science can help address pressing challenges, but only if we train scientists to communicate in the places people actually form beliefs.

I spoke to READER'S DIGEST about Samuel L. Jackson's lesser-known fear: Germs on a plane!
Ironically, I got this interview request the day before I was about to fly.

When I was hired as an Assistant Professor way back in 2003, NIH was awarding between 7,000-8,000 R01 research grants each year. In 2025, NIH awarded only 3,900 of these research grants. We are witnessing the death of American science.

Ha! I love it!
OMRG! You can have both of the 49'ers!
I'll take Q.
Ozzy is a fav of mine, but if he still rocks challenges, he could be perceived as major threat.
I'll go with Angelina.
That would be cool. OK, Stephenie is my next pick!
I suspect Cirie comes to the game with a huge target on her back, but she is crazy good at avoiding votes.
For my turn, I'll go with Joe
Solid. Put me down for Genevieve next.
Will be interesting to see how Mike plays (and is played) now that White Lotus is a big hit. Do you realize we nearly picked all from one tribe: The Kalo tribe: Jonathan, Dee, Mike, Kamilla, Charlie, Tiffany, Coach, and Chrissy?
So I will go with Chrissy.
I've hesitated to go with any of the big guns as they seem likely to be perceived as challenge threats, but here goes: Jonathan
Ha! Kyle is a great pick. I wonder if recent winners will be biased against. Time will tell!
I'll go with Emily.
Stephen Colbert joked that Bear Beer (beer made with bear poo for some reason) had "afternotes of toxoplasmosis." Funny, but not possible. The parasite Toxoplasma gondii only releases infectious oocysts (eggs) in the feces of cats, not bears.
Coach is always an interesting one to watch play.
Charlie is next on my list.
Would be so cool if an old-schooler dominates the "new era"
OK, next pick for me: Rick
Christian is one of my favorite players of all-time. He was going to be my next pick!
Since you made this wise choice, I will go with Dee
Let's do this! My first pick will be Aubry

For those interested, I'll be talking about the importance of federal funding for biomedical research on Saturday, Feb 14, for CIVIC DAY at the Indiana State Library.
As the worst measles outbreak continues to rage through the US, thanks to Trump and RFK Jr, some within this dreadfully incompetent administration are finally stepping up to beg Americans to get the vaccine and reassure them that there's no link to autism.
Conduct the "knowledge illusion" experiment (described in Sloman and Fernbach's book). Ask people how confident they are about how a bicycle works then ask them to draw one. Show the examples from the study - they're hilarious. But shows how the brain lies to us about how much it thinks it knows
