Jars of Cletwr Carrot Marmalade, and Welsh Lady chutneys. #GairYDydd 21/2/25 On a miserable day (diwrnod diflas) like today, you want some tasty food to cheer you up. And an excellent way to cheer up any meal is to add a dollop of pickle or chutney (ychwanegu talp o siytni). Cletwr sells our own amazing home-made Carrot marmalade (marmalêd moron), and also a range of @welshladypreserves - which are pretty delicious. Pickles (picl, picls) are slightly different. In the season (y tymor) we sell onions (winwns) and vinegar(finegr) to make your own. We also stock cider apple vinegar (finegr afalau seidr). Some people say it does you good (Mae rhai pobl yn dweud ei fod yn gwneud lles i chi - lles = a benefit) Of course, there's also a less anglicised word for chutney and pickle (and preserves generally) - catwad/cadwad Question: should Branston pickle be call Picl Tre-frân yn Gymraeg?

A tin of Suma Chickpea and lentil daal. #GairYDydd 20/2/25 [Well, #GairYGydarNos to be fair] Chickpea and Lentil Daal - Daal Gwycbys a Ffacbys. This one's a bit tricky as there are a number of words, all of which can apply to a range of small lentils and legumess. Ffacbys and corbys are common for lentil, there is pys melin (yellow peas) - pys/bys actualy coming from Latin pisum, as does the English 'peas'. For chick-peas there's gwygbys or gwycbys, pys y llygod. gwŷg are vetches or 'mouse peas' (llygod) Notice though, they are #fegan ac #organig @sumawholefoods has been a co-operative since 1977 - Mae Suma wedi bod yn fusnes cydweithredol ers 1977 A customer writes: "Seriously yummy" (blasus iawn)

We've been a bit quiet on Bluesky lately - sorry. There's a lot going on at Cletwr at the moment.

Y gair heddiw yw 'bisged' - the word today is biscuit. We'll return to biscuits but today it's one of my favourites (un o fy hoff bisgedi - one of my favourite ['hoff'] biscuits. Same derivation as 'hoffi' = to like 'Dwi'n hoffi coffi')

We've just had another delivery of tasty (tastus or blasus) local (lleol) 'Melody' tatws from Capel Bangor. Sachau (bags) of 5kg am £6.50. "Ga i sach o datws plîs?" can I have a bag of potatoes please?

Then there's potato crisps (creision), chips (ysglodion->sglods: 'sgod a 'sglods = pysgod ac ysglodion -> fish n chips). And the caffi serves tatws drwy'u croen (spuds through their skins = spuds in their jackets). (But we don't serve sglods)

Po-tay-toes. 'Tatws' (sing. taten) How on earth did our ancestors survive without them? You can eat them in so many ways: mashed (tatws stwnsh or tatws potch), tatws rhost, sweet potatoes (tatws melys - also available in Cletwr)

What is the Cymraeg for Quorn? Cworn? No, don't be silly, it's just Quorn. It's a brand name. Not all Quorn is suitable for vegans, but our Vegan pieces are (they're not made from chopped-up vegans)

Yesterday I said that we cater for people who are vegan (fegan) with our Vegan Block alternative to butter (remember, 'menyn')
But that's not our only vegan-friendly option. Obviously the carrots (moron) are suitable for vegans, but so are some of our processed items, like Quorn.

Popped into Literary Cat Books while in Machynlleth earlier and treated myself to some early birthday presents.

Think I covered all bases! 🤓

What else involves hufen? Hufen Iâ (ice cream). Normally I'd say that Cletwr stocks ice-cream, but at the moment, we don't! Storm Darragh killed our electricity (trydan) so it all melted (wedi toddi) , & we haven't restocked yet. We will soon - & we'll have a great range, including some vegan ones.

All the surplus calories absorbed at Xmas will be long gone by now. So we can start thinking about CREAM again, 'hufen' yn Cymraeg. Cletwr has stocked Welsh single cream (hufen sengl Cymreig) f'rages, but we haven't been able to get Welsh double cream (hufen dwbl).

Did you know you can make marmalêd out of carrots, not just from Seville Oranges? We make it ourselves and serve it in the caffi, but you can also buy jars in the shop. It's very popular (poblogaidd). It tastes lush (lysh).

At Cletwr we sell bunches (bwnsiad, clwstwr, clwm) of carrots, still with the earth on them. So you can ask "Oes gennych chi bwnsiad arall o foron yn y cefn?" Have you got another bunch of carrots in the back?
