They do use it in the context of "to understand something."
The worst part? I caught myself using it the other day.
I really have come to loathe that word. A certain podcast I appreciate uses it, and it perturbs the ever-loving humanity in me.

To me, lazy writers are writers who lack curiosity. That’s the worst service a writer can offer. It also leads readers to accept mediocrity too easily.
