until I get back to this sort of thing.
Ciao!๐ค

If I do ever get back to it, I'm going to re-do most everything and try to keep the scope in a manageable state. Or I might do something else entirely, who know.
I really haven't had much to add on this account as this is just a gamedev/art account, so I'll likely be quiet for a while longer
It's been a while now.
Some update is better than none I suppose?
The past few months life has kept me out of the gamedev loop and my own hyperfixations have gone elsewhere.
I can't say when or if there will be any further updates to the Mask of Eve project so I've unpublished it's page for now.
Plot wise, I have no preference on either as the remake is 99% the same thing with only some additional quests.
Gameplay wise, the remake is so much more fun and engaging. It's also way better balanced and provides plenty of QoL improvements to mitigate issues the og game had.
I've been caught up in Trails (Kiseki) hype for the past week, starting with blasting through the og Sky 1 (a solid 7\10 game) and now doing the remake, which I'm very impressed with.

The only thing that caught my attention from the Nintendo direct was that Fatal Frame II remake.
Did not expect that. And it's not Switch exclusive so PC for me. ๐
*not necessarily
I really wish I could edit recent posts, come on @bsky.app
It's a lot to rethink, but necessarily a bad thing. This was all intended as a learning experience and I've certainly learned some things.
But of course that means a longer wait until progress can be made. Hence why I've kept that Beta tag in the game so far
Anyway, those are my thoughts. Ciao.
Hence why most choices just lead to bad ends as they deviate from the canon plot thread.
It may be worth rewriting the story as well to accommodate more choices that actually mean something and provide alt outcomes that aren't just a failstate.
So I'm stuck in this spot where I wonder if I should scrap what I have and start over, or modify the existing project.
The other thing is that when I wrote the story, it wasn't written with being a VN in mind, so no choices or alt paths were envisioned. The ones so far, I had to make up on the fly
I also didn't want to complicate the project and I figured by showing more instead of narration, it'd be a smoother process. However I now think this did the opposite as it requires way more sprite work than a typical VN. Another goof on my part, especially as an amateur.
I wanted to alter that ratio in favor of more dialogue but with the way the story is, especially in Act 1, Eve is on her own more often than not so there's not a lot of opportunity for dialogue.
I suppose that is a goof on my part and it's got me rethinking everything.
So with MoE, my initial idea was to minimize narration and show as much of what was happening instead. Eve still narrates in a way through monologue, but thinking about it now, it may not be enough.
Most VNs, at least the ones I've played, have about a 25\75 ratio of narration to dialogue
I've been practicing and getting back into art and drawing which is a surprise. It's amazing how much comes back after so many years of not really doing anything.
Although learning how to transfer that to digital is taking some time and trial and error.
Still got a lot to work on though.
Checking in post.
I'm in a weird spot rn. Being distracted by so many other things and starting to rethink my design approach to the Mask of Eve.
Which of course, means delays on progress. Not sure if chapter 3 will be done this month and I just want to put that out there.

So, some practice drawing.
Started on this one early this morning as a study piece from a sketch from a particular book. I tried to clean it up and fill out some details that the original didn't have.
Anyway, guess the character? ๐

rough sketch of cowboy figure
Lineart of cowboy figure
I sketched up something with a bit more to it; Some cowboy person (don't ask for details, I was winging it).
Started with a rough sketch and then did a lineart layer. Had to mess with the hat a lot to get it reasonable. Proportions aren't quite right, but good enough.

Just a chickenscratch head
So I got a tablet today and tried it out.
There's my first scribble. Not too bad for me, trying to get used to it. ๐คท
Not amazing looking, but this would had been impossible for me to do with a mouse.

Yep. Once you get it, it works pretty well and is quite fun.
Not really... Depends on the game. The untranslated games I played I don't think really spoil much as you won't know the context of anything.
For the translated games I've played, I don't think it was that big a deal to me. I know that varies from person to person though.
Point being, I don't think it's a requirement to be familiar with every show portrayed to enjoy the games.
I've played several titles and I've never seen all the shows portrayed.
I think for shows you have seen, it'll be like enjoying some good fanfiction and seeing how they tie into other shows.
On the other hand, it'll make you want to check out the shows you aren't familiar with also.
I already have some ideas on how to improve things for next time. But that'll be for the next project.
I might continue the Mask of Eve, or I may pivot to something else. I haven't decided yet.
On the thinking part, my long term goal is to get all of Act 1 of the Mask of Eve made, which is five chapters.
I think that is doable and it would be an okay stopping point.
Making this game was a first time experience and I'm learning some things, so it doesn't have to be perfect.
I took a week off to step back from my game project, catch up on other stuff and think on things.
I'll be getting back to work this week to do chapter 3.
As usual, the plan is to have the next chapter ready by the end of the month.

I understand it's a time investment, and given that I probably could get halfway decent.
A drawing tablet would probably help a lot instead of a mouse.
I'm gonna see what I can do in the meantime though.๐ค
I know part of the issue is I'm stuck with a mouse which is a pain in the ass to use for digital art.
I'd like to try a tablet at some point, but I money for that first. And then decide if it's really worth the investment.
For context, I took a lot of art classes back in school so no, I'm not a noob at art in general.
I'm still kinda passable at physical drawing and know perspective, body proportions, color theory, etc.
I've just never been able to translate that to digital art programs.
