As a fountain pen show attendee - yes, this is totally a thing. When possible, people avoid checking their pens… which means in some cases they’re going through security with 50+ pens. Apparently confuses the hell out of the TSA.

And I heartily agree with other folks - if possible get a pair that will fold down to fit into luggage. If flying, they have to be checked.

Based on the description, I’d advocate for poles. I have a pair and on the occasions I don’t have them, I usually wish I did. Price wise - in addition to weight there’s probably a material difference. This can affect their failure mode - bending (aluminum) versus breaking (carbon-composites).
