Side view of a Killdeer chick beautifully lit up by late afternoon sunlight. It is standing in a patch of spring leaves, some ovate and some fern like. It is standing in front of shaded shallow water and greenery.

This not quite week-old Killdeer chick stepped into a patch of late afternoon sunlight. Stunning + adorable?! I'll take it. ๐Ÿฅฐ #stunday #birds #babybirds

Three ducks floating on blue water, two in the foreground facing left, one in the back turning away. The middle duck is in focus. The ducks are beige, taupe, and brown, with coral bills and white ringing their dark eyes.

For today's #BirdOfTheDay Alt Theme #WhatTheFlock (three or more of the same species), a trio of black-bellied whistling ducks (Dendrocygna autumnalis) at Circle B Bar Reserve this winter.

For today's #BirdOfTheDay theme of #PetalsAndPerches, here is one of my early bird photos, a black vulture (Coragyps atratus) in a field of wildflowers at Clybel WMA in Georgia. I call this emo vulture "Me in High School."

Looking for millipedes, I instead found a smooth earthsnake. Photographed this evening at Sweetwater Creek State Park. #NaturePhotography #Earthsnake #Snakes #GAStateParks #GeorgiaOutdoors

Noticing Nature Everywhere or How I Accidentally Became the Top iNaturalist Observer in My State, and You Can, Too!

My constant search for wildlife teaches me to see more and more. It starts with a leaf. Then, I notice the insect on the leaf. When I get closer, I notice a gall on the plant or a leafmine etched into that leaf. I may notice a mite attached to the insect. The more you see, the more you learn to see.

Emerge As February flows into March and winter becomes meteorological spring, we exist among the edges where two seasons meet.

We are in the period where meteorological spring and the end of astronomical winter merge and coexist. My latest post focuses on details of this time in and around Atlanta.
Also, the second installment of my Georgia Wildflower Day Trip guide!

Violet miner bee visiting white form of common blue violet. The bee has a black abdomen with thin yellow stripes, yellow fuzz bordering the thorax and head, and fuzzy yellow legs. The violet has five petals, all white streaked with dark blue-violet. It is a short plant with heart-shaped dark green leaves growing amid brown leaf litter.
