You can't fix major depression, neglect, self loathing, and arrested development with a grown-up kiss. You have to be willing to face the parts of yourself and others that are desperate to be known. It took an apocalypse for Shinji to get it, because nobody who was equipped to help him-
Which is why we have End of Evangelion, lol. The audience demand that Shinji be rewarded with a romance misses the point that Kaworu arrived to make: the hedgehog's dilemma is overcoming the fear of facing your own vulnerability to connect with others. Which Shinji just cannot do.
-knows from the outset that Shinji will get preferential treatment over her no matter what, not just because he's Gendo's son, but because he is a boy.
SO MUCH of the show turns the viewer against Shinji, to the point that the hopeful maturity he gains by the end is simply lost by the plot.
Rei is a 4year old clone of his mother with incomplete memories forced to masquerade as a normal teenage girl and cater to the emotional breakdown of the son she never got to raise, so she has her own shit to deal with, to say the least. And Asuka, the most emotionally mature person in the cast-
Misato makes him into her little house boy and thinks that the same kind of teasing gratification that works with adult men will work with him, because men are all the same to her. Ritsuko treats him like a failed version of his father and resents that he's the only one who can pilot 01.
A lot has been said about how he presents as a misogynistic little shit, (and he does) but he's hardly a one-note brat who doesn't see women as people. He's being manipulated by adult women in a misogynist setting and that has a knock-off effect for the girls his age he is trying to connect with.

Rewatching NGE as an adult is an experience. The show deliberately examines how a child is abandoned into a world of adults who resent and desperately need him to sacrifice his life for their sakes, while also highlighting his own resentment towards the world. It's fucking astounding stuff.
