Witch Hat Atelier being good as an anime was no surprise, but this felt like the first episode where it surpassed the idea of being a replica & became a meaningfully different experience that stands the comparisons to the original. Not sure how often they'll be able to pull this off, but damn great

Considering Shirahama's relationship with the fandom and how much she encourages them, it's great that she got an adaptation so attentive that Coco's first time putting on her outfit is lowkey a cosplay guide. Creating replicas for the studio (and making oomf wear them) was clearly worth it

Exhibit 537 of the anime's control of the information being great: you can see that it was already quite smudgy before Coco absentmindedly tried cleaning them, so she's blaming herself way too much for this bsky.app/profile/yuyu...

All of this works thematically, in ways that the anime reinforces but are obviously Very Present in the source material as well. It doesn't get more blatant about the parallels between magic and art than Coco going through a doomer artist's fears that they'll never catch up bsky.app/profile/yuyu...

If the adaptation began *constantly* adding connection points to Coco's mom, I could see this becoming... another currently popular fantasy series, let's say. But for this episode, I can only see the literalization of a guiding hand as a way to make this realization all the more resonant

Even in the sequences where the episode borrows some imagery from the manga, Katsuya Oshima's storyboards give tangible, flowing form to the idea that their craftsmanship had always been a form of magic. And so, it's on Coco to take advantage of those precious memories

I wonder if the climactic success cut is an approved animator adlib though, because hitting a rock full-speed is so ruthless. I do that and my arm shatters so badly that the greatest puzzle-solvers give up on putting it together

Which then contrasts with the much smoother flight once she's sort of in control. Makes me think that various sports have been referenced for these sequences. Also, again, the storyboard reminding us of the connection between Coco's background and the solution she arrives at is very touching

Fittingly for a trial everyone thought might be deadly, Coco's eventual success in the anime is also a lot more of an uphill climb. The animation does a lot here: the timing but especially the spacing & stark compositions accentuate the friction when she's chaotically taking off. Miracle she's alive

This is not a visual gag, by the way. Do not subject your Coco to emotional distress or she may ooze like spilled ink
