The spiralling honeysuckle twists around young, flexible stems, causing a constriction resulting in a spiralled, "barley-sugar" twist in the wood.

These unique, distorted stems are wanted by walking stick makers. The handles of rustic walking sticks are referred to as "honeysuckle twist".

Honeysuckle (Lonicera periclymenum) – the green leaves grow up a tree by spiralling around the stem. This often happens in hazel, but here it's happened around a birch.

Ash is a widespread, native woodland tree that prefers moist, well-drained and fertile soils. It is very intolerant of shade – young trees will fail to grow in densely shaded areas. Large, spreading specimens can often be seen in hedgerows.

A mature ash can produce 100,000 seeds in one season.
