Earlier this year I spent a week in #Kenya meeting with energy stakeholders to talk about how subseasonal weather forecasts can support energy planning in #Kenya, and their transition to 100% renewables.
See the @ncas-uk.bsky.social news story linked below for more information about the project!
For more info and student view point see links below. CLimate Futures is a genuinel interdisciplinary course on Climate Change - which to me makes it really exciting

"Tropical cyclone induced compound flooding in Madagascar: a coupled modeling approach"
In this paper we develop a high-res compound flood model over #Madagascar, and use it to explore the flooding associated with Tropical Cyclone Batsirai.

Absolutely chucking it down in #Nairobi - and the FASTA app agrees!
And yes, yes I went and stood in the heavy rain to try and get photos and videos of the #longrains to use in presentations.
Finishing the week in #Kenya at ICPAC - great to catch up with colleagues there and hear about the work they are doing.
And to complete a week on renewable energy we even had a look at their solar panels!
Watching the cloud build and the #rain get closer on the FASTA app - think I might need a raincoat for this afternoon!

After a week talking about wind and solar power in Kenya it was great to visit the Ngong Hills wind farm and talk with the engineers there about how forecasts would be used in their decision making.
Yesterday we had meetings at the University of Nairobi - exciting to see the SWIFT-NESST laboratory and find work we'd collaborated on displayed round the room!
Meeting rooms on the 16th floor give great views over Nairobi and a great place to watch clouds from!
In Kenya this week for the POWER-Kenya (Potential of sub-seasonal Operational Weather and climate information for building Energy Resilience in Kenya) kick off meeting, meeting with stakeholders from the Kenyan energy sector and Kenya Meteorological Department and hearing their thoughts & priorities

Wet season onset is really important for farmers in West Africa, but can sub-seasonal forecasts be used to produce onset forecasts to support decision making?
Here we explore the skill of S2S forecasts in forecasting onset over Ghana.

Great poster session with the Climate Futures students today, where they presented their posters on their group research projects. There were some great posters looking at the climate impacts of seagrass, reducing aviation, painting buildings white, and aerosols.
We even had vegan mince pies!
#Agricultural advisories are key for helping farmers to prepare for the upcoming season.
New #PhD opportunity looking at "integrating weather and climate information into ... agricultural advisories" in #Kenya.

At the Senedd today at a World Climate Simulation โmock COPโ event for local school students, ahead of #COP28.
There were keynotes from British Council Wales, WCIA and Julie James MS, and a short talk from me on the science of climate change, before the students got stuck into the negotiations!
Taking a quick break from the WCRP #WCRPOSC2023 conference to enjoy the clouds in Kigali!
Been a great week, with so many exciting conversations. But my "interesting science to do" list is now very long!
Poster is up at #WCRPOSC2023!
I'll be at board 13 later talking about recent work looking at the drivers of dry season #rainfall over #EastAfrica.
So excited to be in Rwanda for the WCRP Open Science #WCRPOSC2023 conference! Really looking forward to hearing about ongoing work & WCRP activities, & connecting with colleagues.
Starting today with the EMCR conference. Really interesting conversations around climate research in the Global South!
Excellent day the at Africa MAC (Meteorology and Climate) meeting at the Met Office. So good to hear about all the exciting work going on, and catch up with colleagues. Can't wait for the WCRP Open Science Conference in 2 weeks time to continue the conversations!
