What a great day

But all I want to know is Tianammen square a nice place to visit?
Following last night's #edchatie discussion about AI in Irish education, this will all be of interest to teachers here.
Thanks for sharing. Great read
Great article 👏👏

Thank you Emer. It's exciting, I'm learning so much. Will be presenting some early findings @dcuioe.bsky.social www.hackthiscourse.com/symposium/#/
To be fair I would say that lots of people aren't even aware of this issue...honestly! And that's from having discussions with colleagues.
And of course not forgetting all the other ethical issues around using AI in education.
Too much hype, too much bells and whistles, not enough questioning 😩
Thanks John...yep good to be back
In CS space, much of the literature and my own research would say novice programmers should not use AI. I would think it's the same for other fields too.
I do similar in my maths class & that's coming from someone who loves tech & teaches CS!! I'm using less and less tech in the maths class recently..Students need to discuss what they're thinking, and show the "mess of learning" in their copies.
Will send DM. LinkedIn is great for all this stuff. Has been great for my research, for connecting with people but also my own learning ! I'm learning all the time..we need to model this with our students as well. Learning about AI is not about using it..in fact the more I learn the less I use it 🤣
Are we entering "model collapse"? 🤷♀️ Lots written up about this too.
We have to discuss environmental implications of AI! Not spoken about enough unfortunately.
We have a duty to inform ourselves and our students of these ethical issues and model good practice.
Do we have to use AI for every post, lesson, image generation? #edchatie

And takes stuff from itself....because there's so much AI generated stuff out there , it's starting to eat itself... As written by @eam0.bsky.social in this linkedin post

I have loads of interesting articles and links but maybe they need a separate thread 😃 a discussion around "AI in education" needs to go beyond "the tools". We owe it to our students to learn ABOUT AI before USING it. This is as recommended by UNESCO and other country guidelines.
@leonfurze.com has some great blogs about this ...this one on "teacher workload" well worth a read. leonfurze.com/2024/08/16/l...
The narrative out there is that it does make your job easier ..but says who? We need to be critical of this discourse. One of the most enjoyable parts of teaching for me is designing lessons, I don't want an algorithm to do that for me!
Irene Stone, CS and Maths teacher and EdD student @dcuioe.bsky.social research interests generative AI and programming. Also have big interest in AI in education in general #edchatie

Deeply grateful to receive the John Smith scholarship @dcuioe.bsky.social, an award established to honour the legacy of Dr. John Smith in advancing academic excellence. Thanks to the DCU team, my #EdD colleagues, and my supervisors for their support.
My 5th yr students (age ~15-17) are struggling to understand the difference between rule-based and ML AI.
Going to try this unplugged activity tmw. Good old fashioned cutting and pasting 😀
Learning about AI before using AI!
"The amount of AI-generated child abuse images found on the internet is increasing at a chilling rate, according to a national watchdog."
These disturbingly realistic images can be generated from real children's images from social media.

Brilliant!!
Had fun with the "intelligent piece of paper" 5th yr CS students. Led to great discussions on algorithms, pseudocode and what intelligence really means thanks to @cs4fn.bsky.social for lesson idea! teachinglondoncomputing.org/resources/in...
