Same, it did wonders for me personally. But I defer to the science
Reporter: What do you make of Republicans saying that Virginia—
AOC: Wah wah wah.
We have asked Republicans for 10 years to ban partisan gerrymandering. And for 10 years, Republicans have said no.
What they’re just mad at is that they have been accustomed to a Democratic Party that rolls over.
I give students suggestions on how to not accidentally graduate early (including my own kid). Life is short, let them enjoy being young as long as possible.I'm certain that if their parents were concerned they'd be on the case.
Why are they doing this on the Administration's budget request instead of waiting for Congress to weigh in?
This is a gut punch to our nation's leadership in science. Please call your representatives in Congress!
"At an internal all-hands meeting on Friday, NSF leaders announced that they would dissolve the agency’s Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences directorate based on the budget request, according to two NSF staff members who shared information anonymously in order to speak freely"

If this is accurate and I'm reading it right, it sounds like NSF leadership has decided to shutter SBE just on the basis of the president's budget request, i.e. before Congress ignores that request and does what it wants, perhaps maintains funding. Just apocalyptically bad
what’s different this time is that the executive is refusing to spend what congress appropriated

It is worse than you know
Saving SBE starts before the bill is written.
SBE needs a distinct FY27 appropriation. If your sch. is on the list, get a group of colleagues to meet w your House/Sen. offices. Esp. for Republican seats, direct constituent comms matter. Timeline/templates/updates:

...scientific disciplines. Now, its guiding light is acting as henchmen to a lawless President. NSF’s Directorate for Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences is being used as a culture war cudgel, to the express detriment of our sciences for economics and prosperity...
Statement from Rep. Lofgren (ranking member of House Science Committee) re dissolving SBE: "What NSF is reportedly doing is in illegal contravention of the laws enacted by Congress this January. For over 75 years, NSF’s guiding light was how to best support cutting-edge research across all...
Chart showing proposed budget cuts The Trump administration has proposed a plan to reduce funding for many science-related agencies. All figures are in US dollars. Agency 2026 budget 2027 proposed budget NASA 24.4 billion 18.8 billion National Institutes of Health 47.2 billion 41.3 billion National Science Foundation 8.8 billion 4 billion Department of Energy Office of Science 8.4 billion 7.1 billion National Institute of Standards and Technology 1.8 billion 900 million National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration 6.2 billion 4.5 billion Environmental Protection Agency 8.8 billion 4.2 billion Source: American Association for the Advancement of Science, White House Office of Management and Budget, US Department of Commerce
There's plenty of other details (see this quick chart) but the SBE close-down is particularly notable because it is the president's budget request having an impact now—despite the fact that these requests are typically rejected by Congress.
BREAKING: In response to huge cuts in Trump's budget request, NSF is shuttering its SBE directorate. Staff will be transferred to other parts of the agency and "grants that align with Administration priorities" will be maintained.
That & more w/ @maxkozlov.bsky.social & @edwrdchen.bsky.social
So… they’re doing this preemptively. Before the budget request even goes near Congress. Just treating it as a fait accompli.

Thanks for sharing! It’s something I’ve felt personally as a postdoc.
Psychological orgs who have gov affairs representatives should be talking to members of congress to advocate for SBE to get a distinct appropriation in FY 27. Would love to hear from them to assess our signs of hope.
The NSF 2027 budget has noted that they will close out the Social, Behavioral, and Economic Science Program (SBE). This is not a good thing. nsf-gov-resources.nsf.gov/files/FY-202...
SBES – social, behavioral, and economic sciences – goes to ZERO in 2027. That’s STS, sociology, anthropology, as well as economics. NSF led by a business guy affiliated with Peter Thiel. just a swathe of fucking napalm across the board. No words.
We had better win this damn election.

Another university getting rid of things you could only ever do at a university and replacing them with stuff a 13-year-old can do on a phone
Grand opening, grand closing.
