Comic: Types of Board Game. [Each panel has a person, a person with a ponytail, a person with shoulder-length hair, and a person with a white hat seated around a table with different board game and pieces on top. (1) Boring: PERSON 3: Each turn, roll a die and move your token. Turns proceed clockwise around the table until we all get tired and go home. (2) Abstract: PERSON 1: Each turn, you can place any number of red triangles or blue squares on a hexagon, or move any hexagon to a... (3) Hyperspecific Theme: PERSON 2: It’s October 2, 1814. The Congress of Vienna convenes. You are each in charge of distributing and lighting candles for the opening ball, which was held at these three locations... (4) Overcomplicated: PERSON 4: It’s a cross between *Twilight Imperium* and *Cones of Dunshhire*, but implemented entirely in category theory. Every cone is a monad, and... (5) Cooperative: PERSON 3: We’re working together to sort these decks of cards using only hand gestures. After that, we’ll silently organize my junk drawer. (6) Branded: PERSON 1: You can play as Phoebe, Chandler, Monica, Rachel, Ross, Joey, or, due to an ill-advised tie-in, Goku. (7) Party: PERSON 2: Each of the cards in your hand has a bad word on it. GM Tip: Character death should feel earned, not random. Give players a chance to make final choices, have last words or go out in a blaze of glory. Death is more meaningful when there's agency in it.

I was thinking about vibe coding today and how often I see the argument that if you just write very long, detailed prompts you'll normally get what you need. And now I'm wondering why I'd write a giant prompt to get indeterminate output when I could just write the code.

RPG tip from the archive: Allow for unexpected outcomes in combat. Don't force "all victory" or "all defeat" as the only options.

I will never stop loving Carcassonne; it’s as stabby or as chill as the table wants it to be. This game was with River 2, Shrines, and the King and Robber expansions. Simple tweaks add to the fun! 🏰 ❤️

Reminder: including alt-text on your images is helpful in many ways! It increases accessibility, can add context/detail, makes search more effective, & can improve your reach (a lot of us won’t re-share images without alt-text). If you set it as required in accessibility settings, you can’t forget!

If people in your life continually put you at risk of Covid, knowing you still follow precautions & are higher risk, chances are they've been selfish in other ways if you look back. Very likely this isn't a one off

Reminder for Gardeners: Plan to plant an extra row or plant in your garden to donate to your local food bank. It's going to be super important this year. Many are already struggling to buy food.

Two years ago I had my agents ask authors seeking blurbs if they had used LLMs in the writing or research for their novels. If yes, then I won’t read their books. I know I could be lied to. If I am lied to, I will LOUDLY retract my endorsement. I hope more writers might adopt a similar policy.

Every week I hear some version of "well, you've chosen to live this way."

Yes, I choose to try to avoid repeat COVID infections, but I didn't choose to live in an ableist society where everyday things like going to a coffee shop or a movie come with the risk of chronic illness

Imaging a human saying to you, "i will only ever tell you what i think you want to hear, based on what i know about ppl like you, how you start our conversation, & what you say during it. Sometimes that will sound like truth, sometimes like errors or lies. Now: Let's talk about your medical history"

Something I've been thinking a lot about in TTRPG design and theory lately is what I'll call "New Hammer Syndrome". A system becomes popular, and an under-pinning concept becomes the new "hammer" that turns all of TTRPGs into a certain kind of nail.

With my work hat on, here are some red flags that tell me a content designer probably hasn't been involved in designing your website. 🚩

1. The main header (H1, page title) doesn't describe what the product or service is, or does.

Well it seems this KLS flare is looking like its in the postdromal stage. During, I often get hypomania, insomnia (that preceded this flare. yay.), and/or spike-then-crash of energy levels

I'm not hypomanic. I NEEDED diphenhydramine to get to sleep, and that hit 3 hours later

More games should have a cowardly baby mode. More games should let me suffer less consequences for dying or mistakes. Should have a "I just want the story" mode. Games should not pride themselves on "look how difficult we are".

I'm bad at video games and I wanna experience the good stories too :c

What makes me sad seeing photos like this & of the NASA astronauts is, you must understand, these athletes didn't just spontaneously all decide to mask. They're being forced to mask be richer ppl have a stake in their bodies & health. Their health has value. Yours doesn't. (With a photo of several masked Olympics athletes at a press conference)

The powers that be know that COVID remains dangerous. They just don’t want any of “their” funds to go towards combatting it.
