the american right's pivot from "we're the *real* liberals" to "no, we're indeed just authoritarians & that's good actually" is head-spinning. like are we even gonna acknowledge what happened there? maybe a little self-reflection? do you not realize we can see your old tweets???

....so yes, it's become very hard and frankly embarrassing to try to defend "the good parts of the industry."

Basically what @bitbanter.com said but with more skeets. W/e, he sucks, he said it himself.

there's a lot to be said about the failure of aesthetically "countercultural" online movements; the authoritarianism of the tech-right, the heterodox logic-bro types being more susceptible to bullshit than anyone, etc. etc. All of which kind of bleeds into crypto culture.

the "libertarian to fascist pipeline" isn't just some boomer atlantic-reader talking point: it's real, I've seen it again and again. @eruditorumpress.com's book "Neoreaction a Basilisk" does the best job I've seen of unpacking these ideological through-lines (esp. the "no laws for lions" essay)

...and when push comes to shove, many (not all!) of these people actually are in fact diametrically opposed to these very things. this seems more the rule than the exception at this point; examples too obvious to enumerate.

for me the slow, painful realization has been that while self described cypherpunks and more broadly libertarians like to talk about things like "freedom" and "individual sovereignty", they are very often just paying lip service to things that sound nice and culturally trendy...

(also if we're being real here – can I be real here? let's be real: as a nerd who's a sucker for wonky technical debates it was nearly impossible not to get completely "nerdsniped" or "one-shotted" or w/ed the kids are saying by the industry circa mid/late-2010s)

well said @bitbanter.com — I would say my interest in crypto (& other P2P tech) as a bulwalk against various types of concentrated power, and more broadly as an environment to run messy but potentially useful opt-in (ideally) economic experiments hasn't changed *all* that much.

Interesting to revisit the white-hot hatred Matt Walsh used to have for Trump supporters back when he was a never-Trumper, before he abruptly pivoted and redirected that same hatred towards trans people and the like.

It kinda seems like he just enjoys hating stuff.

Instagram reels of families being tormented set to Olivia Rodrigo satisfy the base's bloodlust without tanking the economy and costing you the midterms (and also without having to awkwardly imprison your megadonors) — win win!

*Tinfoil hat on:* The "problem" with this plan — which is so obviously more effective if you're actually interested in minimizing illegal immigration — is it would actually work, and then they'd have to deal with the economic fallout from the sudden loss of cheap labor.
