“In sum, no friend
like a book — to the wise,
that is, and the fool
isn’t worth my rebuke”

Three Pages of Don Quixote Here was a woman who had lived through a dictatorship, been through three marriages, and built a brilliant career in a relentlessly male-dominated field. And she was happy.

A year ago, my friend Alexandra Bellow died: a Romanian mathematician, former wife of Saul Bellow, and an extraordinary woman who was in love with Don Quixote until her very last day. I wrote this small tribute in the days just after her death.

Emily LaBarge: "Chantal Akerman’s Elusive Interiors" Emily LaBarge examines a major theme of Chantal Akerman's film.

"One of the most astonishingly feminist characteristics of Akerman's work is, in fact, the privacy of her characters, who divulge so little." Emily LaBarge on Chantal Akerman.

People throw the words "literary event" around a lot, but this is gonna be *the* literary translation event of next year, just nothing else could compare.

Another stunning poem by Eugenio de Andrade which shows how he was one of the greatest of the past century

In the simplest way

It is just the beginning. Only later does it ache,
and one gives it a name.

To scholars of democratic backsliding, it is difficult to overstate how big a deal today's election in Hungary, a country of less than 10 million people, is likely to be as a narrative milestone for our age, regardless of which way it goes.

A screenshot of a nested social media thread.
At the top, Timothy Sylvia (@timothymsylvia) writes: "One would think a Harvard Law School clinical instructor would be able to recognize sarcasm."
This post quote-reposts Alejandra Caraballo (@esqueer.net), who writes: "This is legit psycho shit."
Alejandra's post itself is a quote-repost of an interaction between two users. First, Curious Entity (@curiousentity1) writes: '"Harvard Law School clinical instructor and trans activist"....LMAO..You add this every time'. Below that, Benjamin Ryan (@benryanwriter) replies: "I have a keyboard shortcut."
At the bottom of the image, replying directly to Timothy Sylvia's top post, Benjamin Ryan (@benryanwriter) adds: "No, I literally do have a keyboard shortcut. I’m not about to type that out every time."

“Courage or Foolhardiness”: Talking Aimé Césaire with Alex Gil - Public Books “This way of going about prophecy sadly replaces the historical fact of Black victory with a timeless failed rebellion. Too bleak, if you ask me.”

Sat down for an interview with Marlene Daut for @publicbooks.bsky.social on my edition & translation of "......And the Dogs Were Silent" by A. Césaire. Always fun to talk to Marlene. Could not ask for a better interlocutor!

Colonialism after Orientalism has always valued the antiquity of places like Iran or India, while devaluing its contemporary life and aspirations for the future. To define civilization in those terms is revolting. But those ancient cities are teeming with life and its myriad radical possibilities.
