Lobbying coalitions have been central in my work for a long time - but only recently I’ve begun to reconsider one of my assumptions: that you need interest alignment to work together. Esp in European lobbying, I believe that the logic of brokerage is quite central. Very happy about this publication!

📢 New Article Out!
Coalition formation as a popularity contest?
In a new study, @wmjunk.bsky.social and I examine which groups are preferred partners in agenda setting. We find NGOs are favoured, and trusted allies trump capable newcomers—shaping how networks form and why NGOs hold an edge.
Does lobbying access actually mean lobbying influence?
In our new @jeppjournal.bsky.social paper we try to answer this key question in interest group politics and lobbying by exploring models of access = influence translation.

Thrilled to share my new publication @epsrjournal.bsky.social!
When we think of lobbying, we often picture big businesses or NGOs. But regional governments lobby, too!
But what makes govts-as-lobbyists successful?
I study intergovt lobbying success based on a multi-year data collection effort
Thank you, Chris! ☺️

I can also highly recommend this analysis of conflicts in the European Parliament around funding for green NGOs.
These are extremely important & worrying debates, and it is great to see them covered so thoroughly in the press.

I've talked to Altinget about threats to civil society in Europe. We discussed the European Court of Auditors' new recommendations about more transparency, but also conditionality connected to EU's values.
Read in this interview why this can be a problem (in Danish)

Working with "the enemy" is a wide-spread lobbying strategy!
In our new article, we study the logic of brokerage & how brokers between opposing policy positions can secure advantages in lobbying.

Are lobbyists influential? The public sure thinks so, but applied political science since lobbying registration data emerged (late 90s) struggled to produce evidence that it does. In new review @wmjunk.bsky.social @heathbrown.bsky.social and I chart a wave of research showing that lobbying matters.
If you are looking for an up-to-date review of what we know about the effects of lobbying, look no further!
Thrilled to see this out in ARPS!
Hope it reaches a broad set of audiences to share the strides this subfield has made in the past 15 years… ⬇️⬇️⬇️
Tak, Marc! 😊
