Whenever people say AI reduces “friction” on basic tasks I want to remind them that friction is the force that allows you to walk. Without friction, we’d all be sliding around powerlessly or unable to move. Friction is unfairly maligned. You need friction! Friction is good.

I’m excited to have a story on @mattkendrick.bsky.social’s end-of-year list but even more excited to read through the whole post—a blurb for each chosen story, plus prompts! So much love for the ever-evolving, boundary-pushing world of flash fiction 🌟

This is such a wonderful list, and I love the way your writeups work like a little blurb for each story. Thank you for including mine!

A novel called KARENS, a grownup version of HEATHERS where the Karens terrorize their neighbors via the local HOA until a new family moves to town and the murders begin. This idea would have been so funny had I had it in 2021 instead of right now

gives lie to the whole “but no one knew they were like that back then” (also would be nice to see someone bring her book back out)

The Scream-Room  – swamp pink

I have a new flash piece out in swamp pink! Written on my phone during a particularly gnarly prenatal testing appointment—read for feral cats, haunted houses, and the cursed chaos of newborn babies 🏠😱

“It’s weird, isn’t it?” she says. “Squaring who you are with who you might have been…”

Great evocation of character and yearning in this fab piece from @h0lc0mb.bsky.social; so much movement from beginning to end

Eugenia by Susan Holcomb She’s a poet and a bass guitarist, the coolest in my LA mommies group, and someday soon: a breakout late-in-life pop star. “I could be like a female Leonard Cohen,” she tells me one day at the park…

NEW STORY⚡️🐸

“Eugenia” by @h0lc0mb.bsky.social is now up!

Q: What else would you like to share that I haven’t asked?

A: I was resistant to characterizing this book as being “about motherhood” because that used to feel limiting to me. But now I wonder: why limiting? Birth-giving isn’t just life-or-death—it’s the whole LIFE side of the equation! Why do we anchor on a single image of a “mom” when mothers come in as many varieties as individuals? I used to think, when a new book on the subject would appear: oh god, another book about motherhood! The same way I thought, when Conclave came out: oh god, another movie about the Pope! But surely motherhood is as inexhaustibly fruitful as any other topic relevant to the lives of millions. Also, I watched Conclave, and it was really good.

If you get a chance, check out this beautiful review of @h0lc0mb.bsky.social's WOLFBABY by @ginathayer.bsky.social.

"After reading, we emerge from the tunnel where we, too, have looked at things unseen. We lick our teeth and sniff the air. We check for answers, for the presence of blood." 🐺 ❤️
