Such an exciting time to be in neuroscience. To study how animals do the amazing things they do: from collective behaviors to navigation, camouflage and more. How can we define the constraints of a sensory system if we don't study diverse animals and their behaviors?

Oh and #fundscience.

Pancreatic cancer mRNA vaccine shows lasting results in an early trial Scientists caution that more research is needed, but nearly all of the patients who responded to the personalized vaccine are still alive six years later.

TV didn't come to my city until 1975 and so never watched the first human on the moon. This was soooo cool (and a bit nervewracking).
Just boggles the mind that humans can do this. Science, amirite?

Check out this very cool work from @heiman.bsky.social where they identify a protein that mediates specific cilia-glia attachment. (We did a teeny tiny bit for the paper). Expanding on the cilia 'contactome'!!

The worm community has lost a true legend with the passing of Don Moerman. Don's impact on C. elegans research is beyond measure. A friend to many of us here in MN, his work has been invaluable, contributing >5,400 strains (VC & DM) to the CGC, 20% of our collection!

Trump administration drops court fight to cap NIH payments for research overhead costs The Trump administration will not be asking the Supreme Court to take up its fight to slash NIH support for research indirect costs

Oh good, Universities can continue to educate doctors and cure diseases, because why would that ever have been in doubt in a modern civilization.

In an echo of Apollo 8, NASA’s Artemis II astronauts witness ‘Earthrise’ and stunning ‘Earthset’ Artemis II’s astronauts got the opportunity to recreate the iconic 1968 photograph on either side of their journey around the moon, showing Earth as beautiful—and precious—as ever

These images from the Artemis II mission are soothing my soul on a day when genocide and nuclear war is being threatened by men gone mad with bloodlust.

The NIGMS MIRA NOFO asks for it.

I would! Nightmare would be to get pulled due to some admin error. Thanks Needhi.

For the MIRA right? I was going to stick it at the end of the Contributions section somehow unless our grants people tell me to do something else. Trying to combine the SF424 directions with the MIRA-specific ones and 🤯🤯🤯

An enteric neuron ionotropic receptor regulates salt stress resistance - Nature The I3 pharyngeal enteric neuron in Caenorhabditis elegans detects high-salt conditions, and the GLR-9 ionotropic salt receptor expressed specifically in I3 regulates genes related...

We identify genes in distal tissues whose expression is regulated by cholinergic/peptidergic signaling from this enteric neuron in response to salt, and show that mutations in these genes decrease the worm's salt stress resistance.

New receptor (in Ce), new sensory neuron, new function. What fun 🥳!

Link below describes preprint; published paper has more (thx reviewers 😜). W/the Touhara lab (U Tokyo), we show this IR is necessary and sufficient for salt detection. W/the Venkatachalam lab (Northeastern), we show that only this one of 20 enteric neurons responds to salt.

Another paper from our awesome lab out today @nature.com. Led by 🌟 PD Jihye Yeon with fantastic collaborators. We show how an ionotropic receptor (related to insect sensory IRs) in a single pharyngeal enteric neuron senses ingested salts and protects the worm from high salt stress.

Sh*t happens. Despite your best efforts and intentions. Super stressful for all involved. But a masterclass from @scottishwaddell.bsky.social and Gaby Maimon in how to deal with this with scientific integrity and mutual respect. They'll work out the neuronal mechanisms at some point.

No preference for this but really don't much like books written in the present tense. Dunno why but they bug me.

That's a good option (was on the Ed board when it was first established), but I like the Plos Bio types of articles - update, discovery (although eNeuro's negative results option is great).

This is nuts. The only reason to do this is the cruelty and the racism. It will actively harm the U.S. economy. We're not talking about undocumented migrant workers here. These are legal PERMANENT residents.
