With climate action off the EU's agenda for now, it appears the only instrument that could be adopted to reduce emissions in agriculture would be a voluntary carbon credit system. But the question is: who would volunteer to buy these credits, and why?

Fascinating new analysis from @jeffdiamond12.bsky.social for @iatp.bsky.social showing the staggering increase in crop insurance subsidies for what used to be relatively small parts of the program. Another bad thing accomplished by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. www.iatp.org/costs-increa...
There is growing bipartisan agreement that excess corporate power in agriculture is worsening the current farm crisis. A competition-focused farm bill could help. IATP's Ben Lilliston in Agri-Pulse: www.agri-pulse.com/articles/245...

Agroecology Uprooted Episode One: SYSTEM FAILURE. Listen on your favorite podcast platform or at iatp.org.
As the war in Iran squeezes fertilizer supplies, there is renewed attention on the vulnerability of global food systems. But the roots of this crisis go much deeper, and the solutions may lie in an approach called agroecology. Listen to Ep.1 of Agroecology Uprooted now! www.iatp.org/agroecology-...
The U.S. policymaking process is heavily influenced by corporate capture, so it's not an accident that programs like these funnel public money into private companies, and the current administration is dismantling public programs, not expanding them. IATP supports comprehensive crop insurance reform.
Here is my new article. Programs promoting sustainability are being cut while we see huge crop insurance subsidy increases, paid by taxpayers directly to insurers.
NEW: A series of changes to USDA crop insurance subsidies will cost the public an estimated additional $38.1 billion over ten years, mostly benefiting large commodity farms, and funneling billions directly to insurers. www.iatp.org/costs-increa...
Factory farm manure digesters should not be subsidized by the government.
“These enormously expensive projects are not economically viable without significant government support, an alarm bell that they are a risky investment.” @benlilliston.bsky.social

Bayer/Monsanto wants the Supreme Court to block lawsuits from people harmed by their product glyphosate.
Today IATP joined 14 organizations, led by FarmSTAND, in filing an amicus brief challenging Bayer and defending the health & wellbeing of rural communities.

Bright green FarmSTAND branded graphic. Headline: Filed. Text: Monsanto wants to be shielded from lawsuits over the health effects of its pesticides. They claim farmers are on their side. But farmer and farmworker groups are standing against their claims at the U.S. Supreme Court. Image: farmer on a tractor.
Quote: Every worker deserves a workplace that guarantees their health and safety. CDM proudly stands alongside farmworkers in their pursuit of justice against corporations that prioritize profit over people by marketing toxic herbicides and pesticides. Attributed to: Julia Solorzano, Legal and Policy Director, Centro de los Derechos del Migrante. Bright green graphic with orange accents.
Quote: Monopolistic agriculture corporations and lobbyists claim to speak for America's farmers while lining their own pockets at the expense of the farmers and food workers who help fund our local economies. Instead of protecting billion-dollar companies, our government should be working on keeping family-scale farmers in business. Attributed to: Tim Gibbons, Executive Director, National Family Farm Coalition. Bright green graphic with orange accents.
Monsanto wants us to believe that their pesticides—and the health and environmental harms that come with them—are necessary for modern farming. 15 farmer and farmworker advocacy groups joined our amicus brief to say that's not true. They want accountability.

The West River Dairy in western Minnesota, owned by Riverview Dairy LLP, is proposing to more than double its size to 18,885 cattle, putting Minnesota’s water, environment, & small farmers at risk.

Interesting new piece from @iatp.bsky.social showing how confidence in USDA data is eroding under the Trump Administration, with serious consequences. www.iatp.org/farming-risk...
"Unlike oil, there is no strategic reserve for nitrogen fertilizer," writes author, film-maker, and academic Raj Patel in an op-ed. "Domestic producers cannot rapidly replace millions of tons of supply."
NEW: A rapidly changing climate is increasing risk to farmers. Unreliable and inconsistent public data from formerly trustworthy institutions is making things worse. www.iatp.org/farming-risk...
IATP Europe's Sophie Scherger in Le Monde: "The scientists’ advice is loud and clear: Fundamental changes in our food system are needed today to address the climate crisis and protect the livelihoods of farmers and rural communities."
Over 250 organizations have joined our letter demanding no additional funding for Trump's war of choice on Iran.
The additional $50 BILLION the Trump admin has requested would be enough to restore SNAP for 4 million Americans.
Congress must refuse funding for this illegal war.
As the U.S., Canada, & Mexico renegotiate their trilateral trade agreement, they have an opportunity increase fairness & transparency in our food system. We're calling on the U.S. to remove trade policy obstacles to mandatory County of Origin Labeling (COOL) for meat.

Read the open letter that IATP Europe, along with over 30 other EU-based organizations, delivered to Irish leaders today, calling for real reductions in methane pollution and support for farmers in a just transition for agriculture: www.iatp.org/open-letter-...
NEW: As Ireland finalizes its climate protection targets to the year 2040, the Irish government is considering moving the goalposts and embracing a “no additional warming” approach to methane emissions, rather than taking necessary action to protect a livable future. www.iatp.org/poor-climate...
