There really is no such thing as race. We all came from Africa. We are all of the same stardust. We are all going to live and die on the same planet, a Pale Blue Dot in the vastness of space. We have to work together.

Star Trek told me that we would live in a world of peace.
That we would figure out that killing one another was wrong.
That we would boldly go where no man has gone before!
I watched it surreptitiously with the sound off because it came on after my bedtime.
I believed.
That's the future I want

Keira Knightley as Professor Umbridge was my favourite! She did an amazing job at capturing that high-pitch, patronizing tone!
Now I’m extra excited to rewatch the movie and compare!

I'm saddened to hear of the passing of Musqueam Elder Shane Pointe. I remember presenting my proposed thesis to him in one of my first graduate classes. His feedback was wise & encouraging. I'm very grateful to have had that interaction.
Sending lots of love to Musqueam and all who are mourning 🤍
image from inside Artemis II text: i need more men to understand that two men crying and hugging in space after one of them announced they were naming a moon crater after the other one's late wife is actually what peak masculinity looks like.
Earth appearing as a bright crescent behind the Moon’s surface
OH. MY. GOD.
THIS IS THE EARTHSET PHOTO FROM ARTEMIS II. IM SPEECHLESS.

🚨 Christina Koch has officially become the farthest any woman has ever traveled from Earth
A full disc image of Earth, as seen from the Orion Crew Module. The planet is a pale blue, swirling with white clouds and glowing slightly lighter blue in place from reflected light. At lower left, a large brown landmass is Africa, with Spain and Portugal with twinkling lights where the planet curves. At top right, auroras glow in a thin green glow, just barely separated from the planet's surface. Earth is set against the black of space (pic: NASA/R.Wiseman)
More context on this #Artemis II image:
* This is the night side, lit by moonlight. You can see city lights in Spain & Portugal, & a sliver of day at lower right
* The Sun is entirely behind Earth, which makes it a kind of solar eclipse, but w/ Earth doing the eclipsing instead of the Moon:

If all goes according to plan, in a few hours, a crew of astronauts will begin a journey that will take them on a loop around the moon. Here's a video that NASA put together to help people visualize the journey through space, first orbiting the earth before looping around the moon and flying home 🔭
Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen is about to make history on Artemis II as the first Canadian to travel to the Moon and the first non‑American to venture beyond low Earth orbit.
I spent today marking qualitative research proposals, & honestly, I’m so impressed 🥹
Most of them did really well, with thoughtful questions and strong approaches coming through!
My brain is definitely tired, but I really looking forward to seeing how these projects develop into full reports 📝
An American physician, now practising medicine in Canada has some useful reflections
"In Canada, where people don’t fear bankruptcy for seeking care, patients come in and they just talk to you, about doctor things. That’s a profound relief, for them and me"

I spent a recent class reviewing & approving the students’ interview questions as the qualitative TA. While it was surprisingly cognitively demanding, it was so engaging 🧠
It’s incredibly fascinating how differently people approach asking questions 💬

Such a fun, whimsical listening experience! James McAvoy as Mad-Eye Moody was an absolute star and amazing standout for me in this one!
I can't wait to rewatch the movie & start the next book! 🎬

Had a busy day reviewing students’ qualitative research questions. It was amazing to see the lenses & interests they chose. But, as expected, some were a bit too broad or a bit too narrow, but together we reached that Goldilocks goal: a question that’s just right 🥰

If Covidence tracked hours screening articles the way fitness watches track steps, I suspect I’d have a very strong (and very high) streak going right now!
Well… the search for relevant articles continues… 🔎

This amazing scientific advance may one day lead to either more effective treatments or dare I say perhaps a cure.
This is why it is vitally important to fund basic scientific research.

Just walked by a colleague's classroom after my class finished and he was talking about Elvis, getting blank stares and so he had to ask "Does anyone know who Elvis Presley is?"
It's rough out here on these teaching streets.
I spent my Monday replying to student emails with my “teaching assistant hat” on. It still feels a little surreal that students now come to *me* with their questions and ideas 🤯🥹
