Perhaps it can be said that looking deeper at what you have at your disposal (however limited) and figuring out ways to work with it is even more creative than having unlimited resources and access to machines, factories, and funds.
While the caliber may not be in-house, that doesn't mean the modification isn't, even if it's something as (seemingly) simple as reworking some markers on a disc.
For myself, when designing a watch, adopting this mindset has been the best way to get past any discouraging limitations such as the improbability of creating an in-house movement from scratch or difficulties in finding accessible component manufacturers who are willing and capable.
Movement producers are only responsible for presenting the basics of the caliber. It is up to you to have a broader vision of what is possible - deploying a combination of calculations and creativity.
Oftentimes, this means developing or ordering custom parts to turn the idea into reality.
It is a reminder, particularly to designers, not to be constrained to the off-the-shelf intention of a movement, and to look beyond how the movement is presented in the manufacturer's marketing.

Sometimes, watchmaking is as visual as it is mechanical. For example, look at the Dubois Dépraz module DD9000 side-by-side with the DD90000...

Apparently, this is common because there are a few pieces online in this "configuration" 🤣
But it doesn't have to become a parts watch! It is still salvageable with just the center case assembly and an 18mm nylon strap. It actually looks kinda cool. (PS - The pushers won't stick out that far when it's done, I still have to put the e-clips back on each one).
Decided to install a battery and get it back in action, until the outer plastic case (technically called the resin bezel) cracked in half and crumbled to pieces...
Are G-Shocks indestructible or self-destructing? This watch was in a service bag in the repair bin, untouched for the past 10+ years...
