Had to replace my old phone. Which gave me an excuse to get a new phone case printed up.
Yeah, it's Funny Rabbit cosplaying as Rick from The Young Ones.
That's how niche I am now.

Keep it!
I learnt it again, and performed it on Friday (before doing a rewrite, making it relevant for 2026).
So here's a video which intercuts me as a little baby drama student in 1986 with the grizzled old academic I am now in 2026.
Enjoy!
The same song, 40 years apart.
At Friday's show, I played a song called "Stop the Cuts" that I wrote for a demo against education cuts in May 1986.
Fleur Whitlock had kindly sent me footage of me playing the song (I think as a dry run before the demo).
Next show 22 May with Steve Bugeja and Ingrid Dahle plus guests, caption competition and all the usual playfulness.
James O'Donoghue opened at last night's Funny Rabbit Comedy Club and what a great set they did. Really funny, authentic, engaging and playfully challenging.
Fantastic stuff!
Hopefully the audience will be a bit bigger.
Here's me doing some audience participation nonsense.
If you'd like to see me IRL, check out this Friday's Funny Rabbit at the Gulbenkian Arts Centre, when I'll be compering the brilliant Esther Manito and the fab James O'Donoghue plus guests and all the usual trademark daftness.
This was part of our Live Comedy Day event Laughing All the Way to the Archive on 1 April, and playing to the small but perfectly formed audience of about 15 people was a total delight.
"Hip Hooray! It's Live Comedy Day!"
Here's a clip from the tiny comedy gig we did in the library basement where the British Stand-Up Comedy Archive is stored. I was compering, natch.
A hand holding the book "Athena's Sisters" by Katherine Backler. The book has a teal cover with an illustration of two classical figures. The background shows a blurred street scene.
A hand holding the book "Reading Biblical Greek" by Steffen G. Jenkins. The book has a blue and black cover with large Greek letters. The background shows a blurred street scene.
A hand holding the book "The Cambridge Companion to Stand-Up comedy" by Oliver Double. The book has a photo of comedian Hannah Gadsby holding a microphone on the cover. The background shows a blurred street scene.
A hand holding the book "Bitch" by Karen Stollznow. The book has the title in the style of a dictionary entry on the cover. The background shows a blurred street scene.
What did the people of Cambridge buy in March at our bookshop? π
Our bestsellers of the month were...
π 'Athena's Sisters' by Katherine Backler
π 'Reading Biblical Greek' by Steffen G. Jenkins
π 'The Cambridge Companion to Stand-Up Comedy' by @oliverdouble.bsky.social
π 'Bitch' by Karen Stollznow
That's the type of wonky shit I like to do when compering the kookiest comedy club in Canterbury!

Rehearsing my song for this Friday's Funny Rabbit.
I'll be playing a number I first wrote in 1986, followed by an updated version to reflect what's happening today.
A song from 40 years ago reworked for now.
This lovely bunch of students from my stand-up module will be performing their comedy show @thegulbenkian this Wednesday (15 April) at 7pm.
Tickets are a measly...FREE! Yes, that's right! FREE, I tell ya! And you can't argue with those prices!
Gonna be fun - be great to see you there!

Carving of Moe Szyslak from The Simpsons spotted in Whitby Abbey museum
World's scariest zoo spotted in York
You'll be able to see a ton of amazing material from the British Stand-Up Comedy Archive, plus there'll be a tiny stand-up gig with me compering a couple of students and then a reading from a couple of pages from the first draft of "Summer Holiday", the final episode of The Young Ones.
Hooray!

Exeter Arts Centre c.1986. Not my very first stand-up gig, but the first one where it really took off. I was seized by a kind of comedy magic, improvising like hell, getting gales of laughter.
Happy Live Comedy Day!

This is just one of many items from the British Stand-Up Comedy Archive that you can come and see in our brilliant Live Comedy Day event Laughing All the Way to the Archives, on Wednesday 1 April at the Templeman Library, University of Kent.
And the venue was a vegetarian restaurant. And how many comedy clubs do you know who include Wittgenstein quotes on their posters?
This was the last show at the Earth Exchange organised and compered by Kim Wells. The end of an amazing era.
Earth Exchange poster, 1989.
The Earth Exchange was a legendary early alternative comedy venue, and check out this amazing bill!
Not only the mighty Jo Brand but also the ace Alan Davies and Jungr & Parker.
