Episode 16: Who Paid The Riddler of Western Marxism? (Part 1) | Critical Theory Working Group Get more from Critical Theory Working Group on Patreon

You asked, we listened! J.E. & I tackle “Who Paid the Pipers of Western Marxism?” in 2 pts: EP16 on the motive & method of the project; EP 17 on how far the book falls short of its own mission re: the Frankfurt School. Tried to keep it civil-ish but as you can see lol www.patreon.com/posts/156140...

interesting 👁️ has not popped up as much in my circles but there are the limits of anecdote… they have received my blessing to carry on, in this case

ironically enough I think the book's appeal to online MLs, etc, who have had these views for ages is that it provides academic legitimacy to their view that academic Marxism is illegitimate

2 days ago 4 0 1 0

the appeal of the book? or the appeal of the flurry of reviews?

2 days ago 0 0 1 0

it raises the question of what a review is meant to do, I suppose. and certainly if there are fringe indifferent people, critical reviews may persuade them. or may have the opposite effect! who knows

the R*ckhill reviews are well and good, but I do wonder if people understand that for the most part, reviews written for Jacobin or by TT academics or whatever will do nothing to reach the people who've adopted that view of Western Marxism, since by their lights such reviews are always compromised

my thought is that if Marx is just some semi-historicist Aristotelian, MacIntyre is right that you might as well just make him a Thomist too, lol

left-wing student protesters ime are a small if outspoken percentage of most university student bodies. that usual group 1) perhaps doesn’t think no kings style protests will do a lot, and 2) saw the consequences of Palestine protests for students just a couple years ago (under a “friendly” admin!)

lazy update: have mostly been reading articles and chapters and rereading things for teaching, but my rereads of Henry IV, Pt. 1 and of Frederick Douglass's Narrative have especially been sticking in my mind

to add: people working in "continental" phil often write like analytics or like divide-neutral history of philosophy specialists. it's really more canonical conty names who get this criticism, and like, okay, maybe consider why many people capable of writing clearly still find that work valuable

I thought this was great and, once again, highly recommend @budgetmotelabyss.bsky.social's book!

It's not just that Orbán losing inspires hope in other competitive-autocratic countries ruled by right-wing nationalist authoritarians. It's that his loss materially changes things in those other countries, because he's been operating as a headquarters and funding source...

orbán is done in hungary but now the lingering question is whether tisza will undergo the kind of fideszification that fidesz did in the early 2010s

speaking of vaguely academic pursuits—would it be possible a chat with you about Pentiment for an academic article a colleague and I are putting together on the game's approach to historical time/agency? @katedollarhyde.bsky.social, we would love to speak with you too!

for those who missed it: Vijay Prashad published an article that both soft pedaled China's genocidal treatment of Uighur Muslims and also contained false information because it was partially written by AI in the Monthly Review, which is so grotesquely disqualifying it's almost unbelievable

between the stimulating discussion and all of your dulcet tones, knocking on wood for a coming podcast!

less a book launch and more a stimulating discussion of how to develop a properly marxian critical theory of totality with Rob and Sam IMHO
