Nursery Confessional: I'll sell a plant in a pot. I'd rather you buy it bare root. I have to markup the cost of the pot+soil. Worse, I have to chop of half the root system to fit the tree in the pot.
Pictured is Italian Plum. Just wait till you see what I have to do to a semi-dwarf cherry...

Labyrinth at the Botanical Gardens of Silver Springs, Calgary AB.
I was there for the staghorn sumac. ๐ (So-named because of its velvet bark and antler branch structure.) The labyrinth is also very beautiful - the pathways are made with interlocking bricks and creeping thyme. #trees #labyrinth #gardens
One of my favourite little birds. I don't know why. ๐ Maybe because they walk headfirst down trees.

A Mountain Bluebird male perches on dried brown branches.
This is a Mountain Bluebird weekend.
While these birds spend more than half of their lives on their #AB breeding grounds, it is now, when the grasses are brown, the wind has chill, and the first bugs have begun to stir - that bluebirds bring a needed pop to the world. #birds

Neptune, the mysterious, which I planted last year after seeing it in a Bluesky post. I couldnโt find the right spot in the garden for ages and it sat in a pot neglected but once the clematis flowered it was obvious where it needed to be.
Frost Aster (Symphyotrichum pilosum) shot yesterday.

Such delicate pastels.
That's a beauty. ๐
Good to know! ๐ If they survive the shoveling maybe they're tougher than I thought
Lovely. ๐
I dunno. Our garden zone is 3a-4b. The elevation (Rocky Mountain proximity) makes it challenging. I'm at 1200m. I think I just lucked out with a micro-climate corner and one hardy plant! However, it might be nice to have more. ๐ค

'Ice N Roses White' Hellebore
I'll see mine in May. sigh Well I'm lucky I even got one to grow here. It's aptly called 'Ice N Roses White'. โ๏ธ I still have pics from when I brought it home Feb 2023. It has overwintered twice.
Very nice! ๐ง

About six Trumpeter Swans are seen standing on the edge ice of a wintery scene.
At least nine Trumpeter Swans seem to have settled down to overwinter on our stretch of river. Hopefully they will find enough submerged vegetation to keep them going for another 5 months! #Ab #YYC #birds

There are a lot of sources online that say Shetland is home to the endemic species Edmondston's Chickweed.
This is not the case - instead the island of Unst is the only global site for Cerastium nigrescens var. nigrescens, an endemic *variety* of the Artic Mouse-ear.
