The fact that he's just a nice guy who treats the little (robot) girl with respect right from the time they first meet is such a pleasant change from all the games where the male lead is like "Ugh, why do I have to be burdened with other people!"

One thing I like about Pragmata is it looks like it's going to be about a gruff space marine reluctantly learning to be a father but it's not at all. The robot girl is treated more like a partner than a child, she rescues Hugh just as often as he rescues her, and he's actually very kind & heartfelt.

Why are all of MONO's albums in stereo?

That's just a Modest Mouse album.

Me every winter: I love winter. Snow is great. I don't know why everyone is complaining.

Me every spring: Wow has anyone noticed how much better their mood is all the time now that you can leave the house and enjoy some sunshine?

Is 0 exactly half the globe away? Can you be so wrong it loops back around to positive scores?

"Did you see this awful thing someone you've never heard of said on Twitter?!?" No, I didn't, that's why I'm not on Twitter, stop doing this.

I once had a co-worker who claimed their spouse turned down a pay raise because it would bump them into the next tax bracket and lower their take home pay.

7 hours ago 2 0 2 0

I read something by an economics prof who said he'd tell his students on day 1 of class that there would be a question about tax brackets on the final exam, and most students still got the question wrong every year. I don't know why, but most people really struggle to understand tax brackets.

If it makes you feel any better, I bungled the 2nd last one even worse, the day after I talked about how my African Politics prof made us learn to label a map of Africa.

A couple years ago I bought a pair of athletic fit jeans, which I assumed meant "slim" but actually means "big thighs", but now that baggy jeans are coming back into fashion they fit perfectly. Always one step ahead of the curve.

I was already out on WWE for a variety of reasons when they brought Brock back, but when they brought him back that really confirmed to me that I was *out* out. Completely indefensible.

The liberal position ought to be that we are all individuals, regardless of chromosomes or genitals, and it's up to you to figure out what your path through life ought to look like. That can be scary, but it's also freeing.

These days people are always like "We need a liberal/progressive vision of masculinity to sell to young men". No we don't. The idea that there's some core set of attributes that all men should have by virtue of being men is fundamentally conservative. More gender will not defeat gender policing.

Saw Twilight Sad open for Mogwai once. Fantastic show. Loudest concert I've ever been to, and I've been to black metal shows.

Man, this album is so good. Maybe it's just the perfect mix of shoegaze and emo to work for me specifically, but you really should listen to it.

Agree with Michael. I've learned so much from Designer Notes, thanks for putting in the effort to keep it going.

Nehiyawedew Nêhiyawêdêw (Cree Stardew Valley) adds 21 Indigenous plants of the prairies, Canada/US, to Stardew Valley. Each plant is given its name in nehiyawewin (Cree, Y-dialect), becomes forage-able accordi

I just completed the Stardew Valley Mod!! It adds 21 plants (30 sprites) from the prairies and gives a little info about them or their names in Cree! Here's the link, check it out! www.nexusmods.com/stardewvalle...

Sort of related: I took an African politics course in undergrad. The prof drilled into us that we needed to be able to correctly label every country in Africa on a map because it was going to be on the final exam. The final exam asked you to correctly label one country, worth one mark. So annoyed.

A recession caused by the investment bubble bursting is far more likely than a recession caused by mass AI-driven unemployment, yes.

I messed one of them up so badly today that it's probably better if I don't post my score.

Any time someone makes this kind of prediction, the first question they should be asked is, we're 3.5 years out from the first release of ChatGPT and unemployment is still near a historically low level, so if the robots are going to take all the jobs, why isn't there any evidence of it happening?

30% unemployment would be *double* the peak Covid rate, in case you're wondering just how completely out to lunch that kind of prediction is.

1 day ago 8 0 2 0

In the last 78 years (the longest span I could find data for), the highest the US unemployment rate has reached, excluding a few months in 2020 when Covid spiked the labour market, was 10.8%.

As the U.S. turns on its allies, Canadians look toward joining Europe Changes required to join EU would be huge, experts say, including withdrawing from USMCA

This piece nicely covers some of the technical hurdles to Canada joining the EU, but it really downplays the biggest barrier: you'd have to get the provinces to agree to modify the constitution to give the EU powers that are currently held by the provinces, and the provinces would not do that!
